I've got it down to these three cameras. Looking for a good "starter" high-end camera. Thoughts?

Rebel XTI ?

That's the one.....perhaps.

rebel XT is great.

I just bought the XTI with an EFS 17-85mm f/4-5.6 lens.
My first digital slr; really enjoying it, and pleased with the 10 megapixel goodness shooting in raw.

For an entry level DSLR..go with the XTi. 10 megapixels, new CMOS sensor and an integrated cleaning system. WOrth every penny.

20d.
rebels are toys. horrible controls and they look like a piece of plastic. if you're at all serious about photography, you won't get a rebel.
if costs and easy point and shoot fully auto mode is what you want, get a rebel.

exactly what the last guy said.
i have a 20D with a grip and its sick. newbies usually brag about megapixels but really its ease of use and durability that are the real concerns. the rebel is plastic, and looks like a toy. its smaller than usual, so if you have normal sized hands its small.step up. get a 20D or 30D. or hell, get the 1Ds if you have the means... lol

good words. will factor in. thanks. leaning towards the 20D right now.

I agree the rebel in terms of its construction and stuff could be considered a toy compared to the beastly 20d and 30ds. But a bit of a stetch to say get a rebel if you want a point and shoot or to shoot fully automatic.

I have a 20D and love it, however, if you are buying now I would just go with the 30D. The extra features are worth the few hundred extra. Some advantages the 30D has over the 20D are:
- ISO 0.3 EV steps vs 1.0 on the 20D
-Larger, higher res display
-Larger image buffer
-30D has spot meteringThe acutal image quality is basically the same though, as the underlying APS-C sensor/ DIGIC II processing is the same on both the 20d and 30d.

5D if you can afford it.
best camera ever!

I started with a rebel and now I have out grown it. I'm buying a 30d becuase the 5 frames per second and much bigger image buffer allow for much better action/sport photography. The magnesium shell is built much better and the ergonics of the camera are more comfortable. The battery life on the 30d is much better than the rebel too.
If you are going to get a 20d/30d be sure to get some good glass for it such as the canon 17-55mm f2.8 or tamron 17-50mm f2.8. The kits lens is not really good at all.

Nikon D80...
...runs out of thread with the quickness..

dont listen, 30D and if u want a investment, 5D....

What somebody above said. Because the 30D is out now a lot of shops aren't selling the 20D as jsut the body - you have to get it with that horrible, shitty lens. Don't.
Get the 30D - the extra couple hundred are worth it for the larger image buffer and sport metering - but just get the body alone and then pay a bit more for a decent lens...

I really wouldnt go for the 30D the 20D is still a really great camera.
If its price the rebel is still a really good camera yeah the body is plastic and its small but if you have small hands its perfect!
Besides its the person using the camera thats going to make all the difference.
If I were you. I would buy the 20D.

I think those who bash the XT have exaggerated claims.
Sure its small, but I have small hands and it feels great. Also, its lighter people! Smaller and lighter for me means its more portable and I will wind up taking it to more places and taking more pictures.
Yes is plastic, but who wouldn't treat a $600+ camera like their baby anyway? This really does not bother me at all.
In terms of features and controls it is lacking compared to 20D/30D but these are features that you should grow into as you mature as a photographer. Hell, I haven't reached the level where I feel like I need them yet.
Also for the dude who said that the XT is only good for auto modes...I don't think that could be farther from the truth.
Check out this guy's photos:
http://wvs.topleftpixel.com/Granted he has some pricey lenses and some time on his hands to rework some photos in PS, but he shoots primarily with the XT.
If you have the money I'd say get the 20D, but remember that a camera is only a tool. Its the person behind the tools that makes the great photos.

30D.. I started with a rebel and it was a great starter camera... but i outgrew it after about a year and wished i'd just popped a little bit more for the 20D.
2 things:
1) canon is running a rebate program until january
2) like someone said before, screw the kit lens, you're better off putting that extra $100 towards better glass. and the way canon's rebates work, you buy 2 products at the same time and you get a much better rebate.
