I think those who bash the XT have exaggerated claims.
Sure its small, but I have small hands and it feels great. Also, its lighter people! Smaller and lighter for me means its more portable and I will wind up taking it to more places and taking more pictures.
Yes is plastic, but who wouldn't treat a $600+ camera like their baby anyway? This really does not bother me at all.
In terms of features and controls it is lacking compared to 20D/30D but these are features that you should grow into as you mature as a photographer. Hell, I haven't reached the level where I feel like I need them yet.
Also for the dude who said that the XT is only good for auto modes...I don't think that could be farther from the truth.
Check out this guy's photos:
http://wvs.topleftpixel.com/Granted he has some pricey lenses and some time on his hands to rework some photos in PS, but he shoots primarily with the XT.
If you have the money I'd say get the 20D, but remember that a camera is only a tool. Its the person behind the tools that makes the great photos.

Mamiya Zd.
20Ds are toys. horrible controls and they look like a piece of plastic. if you're at all serious about photography, you won't get a 20d.
if costs and easy point and shoot fully auto mode is what you want, get a 20D.

30D.. I started with a rebel and it was a great starter camera... but i outgrew it after about a year and wished i'd just popped a little bit more for the 20D.
2 things:
1) canon is running a rebate program until january
2) like someone said before, screw the kit lens, you're better off putting that extra $100 towards better glass. and the way canon's rebates work, you buy 2 products at the same time and you get a much better rebate.
check it here

only 13 grand?

oh, one caveat, if you are buying from B&H or someplace like that, don't get the "grey market" or "imported" .. spend the extra $10 or $20 because canon won't honor the rebate on those.
good luck and have fun :)

Go with the rebel. I too was looking for a good starter high end, but i didnt want to go slr yet so I went with the Nikon Coolpix 8700

The kit lens overall felt very flimsy and cheap. Once I tried it I ended up spending a little more money on a Canon efs 17-85mm to go with my XTI, very diverse and great picture quality.
Regarding the auto settings think, I think nocomply's example of Sam's work pretty much says enough about the XT.

good words. will factor in. thanks. leaning towards the 20D right now.

d50 mother fucker :D

Yeah I forgot to mention that the kit lens that comes with the XT is decent at best. Not sure if that one comes with the 20D/30D but that is the one component I would spend the money to upgrade.

The Tamron 17-50mm is a great/ sharp lens for around 400 US$.
Probebly the best quality you will get for under 500 in that range.

looks like a toy? who cares!
i took 60,000 shot with my first gen rebel and it still works like a charm. the plastic body was plenty strong.
are you a pro photogapher? what are you going to be shooting? what will be your images final usage? if not a pro chances are your wasting money on the 30d.
use the cash you will save by getting a rebel and put it towards a better lens than that POS the package with it.

I agree the rebel in terms of its construction and stuff could be considered a toy compared to the beastly 20d and 30ds. But a bit of a stetch to say get a rebel if you want a point and shoot or to shoot fully automatic.

I have a 20D and love it, however, if you are buying now I would just go with the 30D. The extra features are worth the few hundred extra. Some advantages the 30D has over the 20D are:
- ISO 0.3 EV steps vs 1.0 on the 20D
-Larger, higher res display
-Larger image buffer
-30D has spot meteringThe acutal image quality is basically the same though, as the underlying APS-C sensor/ DIGIC II processing is the same on both the 20d and 30d.

if i was gonna go for a canon, i'd get a 5D that's if i have money to spend.
but i am happy with my D80. it tends to over expose on matrix metering and i have to adjust some setting. i was debating over d200vs d80 but since i am not a pro, i am totally happy with d80.

oh and you can view 100% crop comparisons here for most lenses...
