I started with a rebel and now I have out grown it. I'm buying a 30d becuase the 5 frames per second and much bigger image buffer allow for much better action/sport photography. The magnesium shell is built much better and the ergonics of the camera are more comfortable. The battery life on the 30d is much better than the rebel too.
If you are going to get a 20d/30d be sure to get some good glass for it such as the canon 17-55mm f2.8 or tamron 17-50mm f2.8. The kits lens is not really good at all.
