i think (red) associates with a critical status not political symbols.

(Oct 13 06, 15:51)it's not what it's said to be associated with in public announcements, it's what meaning it actually has in common culture - it's basic coding, we should know, most of us being in the ad business
and, ponyboy.. don't jump on us when our first thought is to subversively comment on something that looks too good to be true. we come from a generation fucked over too many times to trust corporations on a first date.
Some of us would just rather donate cash than take part in somebody's ad campaign.

that's nice, kev... //you're a good lil fella unlike those eviiiiil corporations making money off of Aids... :)
You should probably think about giving that next beer you're about to have to charity instead of selfishly injesting it yourself.

hey i earn very little compared to those big businesses boyo. I deserve a little tipple now and again. If every corporation donated the same percentage of profit(wage) as most of us lot probably do, the world would be a lot better off.

precisely. the critical awareness of red is what made the communists use it in the first place. it's so much of a basic instinct thing it cannot fail to work.

fair 'nuff, rafalski... the majority of commentary in this thread isn't from folks who've been 'screwed over' by corporations... the majority are TOO YOUNG to have dealt with that... and second... the Corpo's doing this 'work' aren't BAD... are they?! Are there articles depicting Gap's slave labour out there that I haven't seen?... or for Apple or Motorola etc?? It's not like Haliburton or Lockhead Martin rocking some new 'red' anti-aircraft guns etc etc...... these are everyday companies w/everyday products that WE ALL SELFISHLY BUY... we are their food... and they are ours... they're NOT some evil scary corporations that have screwed over the masses...
... in fact, I usually hear nothing but praise for these companies on NT... ESPECIALLY APPLE and they are barely giving any of their profits.
This is A GOOD IDEA AND A GOOD CHARITY put together by bono and DATA... and I'm sure many other people... they then brought these companies THAT AFFECT ALL OUR LIVES and that we all buy from... on-board to help bring about some serious awareness...
... from what I've gathered from this thread - the majority of you could care less about buying something that goes to helping people w/Aids if it doesn't 'fit in' w/your social well-being.

it's better than nothing.
but critisizing things is also important to improve things.

actually... i'm going to take a big guess here....
but isn't red the colour of the AIDS ribbon?
That would make sense, right?
Pony: Take it easy. Why do you have to resort to name calling? People who have different opinions are entitled to them, ya know?

ponyboy
look at it this way. if you want to fight aids in africa and/or make the world a better more equal place, the last company I would want to support is companies like the gap who's main mission is cheap labor and raping developing countries of resources.
- PonyBoy0
soler... check the companies involved (including Gap)... are they raping other nations etc?
bah... LOOK... this is a GOOD CAUSE... lolzzzzzzzzzzz
if people make some cash off it - that's on them... not you and I... AND SO WHAT?!!
... the thing about having these 'corps' involved is because (like someone said above)... the message WILL get out there.
Just like w/Livestrong - if you were ignorant to the meaning behind the yellow band and wore it for show... so WHAT?! That was the WHOLE POINT!!! Show it offffff!!!! Eventually you got the point!
That lil yellow band reminds you of cancer and the fight to stop it... doesn't it? sure - it reminds you of lance and nike... but SO WHAT?!!!
These companies could have just told Bono and DATA to goto hell...
... nahmean?
sorry for the name-calling... I just get pissed when people speak in generalizing terms about 'corporations' or any 'big entity' w/the force to wield power in some sort of fashion.
For once the 'wielding force' IS doing something good and yet 'you' can still only see the negative aspects of the company? You're lucky to get anything - because 'they owe' you and I nothing.

dude, don't you see grey area between making loads of money and helping precisely in those areas where the most mediatic revenue is? is this a silly question?
why don't they silently help them build schools and universities, and transfer technology without paternizing the poor? And this paternizing enough. For many africans, this Aid thing is another form of colonialism - and you can bet they probably go around hijacking medical supplies for the black-market
It would be better if the big companies that go there for cheap cotton would pay them the same they pay in Florida. That would be the right thing to do. That would be an equal chance.

right on witt
- PonyBoy0
okay okay okay okayyy!!!
There's something I agree w/that you're all saying...
'They' could've done this quietly... and yes - this does help the corpo's that are part of the campaign...
...but you're making it sound like this is just an evil scheme to make money... and HOW DARE someone benefit off of doing 'good'!... :)
Oh... and I'm willing to bet everything I own that this is far from the only charitable campaign these companies are involved in.
***
This whole thread reminds me of the hatred there is towards Bill Gates merely because he is 'rich'... yet so many overlook the incredible things he and his wife make possible for people through their foundation and money provided for research...
***"You're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't."
-Bart Simpson?
- Jaline0
Actually, I appreciate what Bill Gates and his wife are doing with their foundation.
Also, there are actual numbers coming from people who donate to it and how much they donate and what it goes to more often than these campaigns, to be honest.
- ********0
I don't think it's an evil scheme, nor do i hate the rich (not even Bono that sick bastard!). Rich companies creates thousands of jobs and opportunities but not in an equal stance. You can say they're not obliged to create equality - but if so, why all this campaign things?
It's just a perverse situation. It does bring some awareness, etc - but africa or any other poverty stricken region doesn't need our awareness - they just need the tools to come out of what they are well aware of.
Anyway, it's just my opinion. There's probably many aspects of this problem that we don't even dream of. At least me, I'm pretty clueless. Maybe it's up to the people who create International trade laws, not to people buying t-shirts and records.
- ********0
Anyway, there are many nice NGO projects. Most universities gather books and learning supplies. Most hospitals also gather medical supplies, etc. If people really want to help there are more direct channels to do it. At least in Europe there are plenty - maybe because the problem is nearer. At our door, actually.

I work for a charity and know how difficult it is to get campaigners and sponsors to help. I also think the coverage dedicated is positive in the fact that it raises awareness but the percentage of donations is far too low. The (red) companies should donate all their profits and therefore become a donator rather than a contributor or co-sponsor.
It's a fact that Malaria kills more people than any disease e.. HIV/AIDS but who fights for this? PR wins all the way. We don't need a POP STAR POLITICIAN. Just donate in the right places.
- subversve0
this thread inspi(red) me to go out an buy a tee shirt today. i am fully aware that gap made a decent profit on this purchase, but some of it went to a good cause. i could have donated directly to the organization, but i wanted to give credit to the campaign.
i'll be the first to admit that i'm a consumer whore (and how!), but this campaign seems like a really good idea. the cause gets something out of it. the corps get something out of it. and now i've gotten something out of it. who's benefiting the most? i don't know, but i'm hoping its those people that the money is going to help.
- pyeaton0
Please people!
This is ridiculous to be going on like this. If you go into the GAP™, or Apple ™ or any of these other disreputable (sickening corps) institutions, please buy something. Put yourself there. Those folksin Africa are begging for us to buy.
Bottom line. HELP THEM. We live here and argue and digitally yell at each other while they die from hunger and disease. Do what is right. Please.

Am I on everyone's ignore list?
Pony, do you read my posts?
You are telling everyone to grow up, but seriously take a look at the man in the mirror.
Look, you found something you want to put your all in, I'm sorry everyone isn't throwing themselves at the Red campagin's feet.
You are being very one-sided, which isn't like you.
Calling people too young to understand what is going on is ludricrous.
I work with One, I work with Red, and I'm sorry I'm not all gung ho about this.
That's my fault though.
I work with charities, that forget about ... and I'm sorry, I really tried not to talk about this earlier ... they forget about people like me when I was growing up.
I'm glad people are helping people they never met, but seriously, do you think there is a reason why kid's idols are drug dealers?
Do you think there is a reason why 'no kid left behind' is funny on the Daily Show?
Because it is not your town?
Shit fucking sucks in the hood. Kids look up to the dealer with a nice car because of dealing, kids look up to pimps because of money, and it sounds absurd BECAUSE IT FUCKING IS!
I am on the ground level with this, and I've already typed about everything I do not feel rite about.
I understand how you are perturbed about people not jumping up for joy about this, but to be frank (though I'm Jerome), I really don't know where you are coming from.
There were what? 5 shootings in schools in America this past ... WEEK?
Do you know what's weak?
The fact that kids in Pittsburgh get left for dead OFF-SCHOOL and you don't hear about it.
You know what's weak?
The fact that kids who want to learn biology, and algebra have to go thru 5 metal detectors just to get to class.
Shit's wizzeak!?
Because, and I'm really going to be frank (though my name is still Jerome), amish kids, and colorado middle america kids can get shot the fuck up ... and no fucking iota of attention is paid to kids who get got, rite in front of their houses, rite in front of their mothers, rite in front of the basketball courts they played at since they were little.
But since it didn't happen in fucking middle-America it's not news.
There is a g-ddamn reason why the numbers of CHILDREN are dead in grade schools, and high school and it has nothing to do with Columbine.
It has to do with kids who want to go to accounting, but can't account for the bullet wounds that are in their chest for being at the wrong place at the wrong time.
These fucking CNN stories make me fucking sick.
I'm sorry some nut came out and went nuts, however, shit is nothing new to people who actually live in a place that is not on the news because if it doesn't happen on school ground's .... IT DOES NOT ACTUALLY HAPPEN!
I think I lost myself, but to recap, I work with One, and subsequently with Red which is why I thought about timelining this earlier.
And I'll still work with them, because the sadddest fucking thing is kids who have nothing, barely a pot to piss in before the crackhead mother , and beat your ass father (if they are lucky) takes any chance of that kid having any kind of successful life ...
...
...
They'd rather some kid a world away get the treatment that they would never get in their own country.
Fin.

I guess some of you will only be good for this kind of social support:
