I interviewed at a fairly large newspaper a few months back. In the interview it was all about hand-coding and actionscript. Then I had a couple of "tests" using AS and XML, did everything that they asked me to do and they said my "design" didn't "wow" them.
I was like, Fuck off, the entire interview focused on interactivity and your paper runs 17 ads on every page, I thought a stately, chill ad would fit in better on a page with 16 other animated banners. They thought otherwise. The position is still open.

If you would just move to Boston, you wouldn't have this problem. We value designers here. :)

(Sep 28 06, 08:16)i would have to disagree with you, monkeyshine. i think eminem said it best when he said 'ive been chewed up, spit out and booed off stage'

The Northeast is a cold, cold place with cold, cold people. Plus the salary vs. cost of living ratio is totally out of balance compared to most other parts of the country.
I definitely got booed off stage in RI, it simply wasn't meant to be...beautiful place though. Made a few friends, but the rest I was glad to leave behind (no offense to those who love it there)...

It's really been that way for a while and it sucks. Usually the places that want both roles rolled into one are straight web shops or just uneducated. This is were you switch over and become an Art Director. Actually pays more but run the risk of becoming an ad wank that drops names to have a conversation.
The bottom line is that there are places that do know the difference and anything else you'd hate anyway.

I generally feel that a *web designer* should know html and css enough to construct the page, only cause that's what the web is.
But I would like to know what others feel about this?
I know some designers who cannot do anything but illustrator and photoshop mockups...
I try to do both the design and programming, but I definitely spend more time doing design and outsource the dev if needed.

IMO...
designer = illy/ps skillz only
web designer = above + html/css
web developer = coding only, no design skills
jedi master = all of the above

I acutally know HTML/CSS and I consider myself a web designer.
I'm well read and keep up with industry milestones.
Appearently I need to learn flash, actionscript, sql, asp, pcp, lsd, bbq, tna, etc....
Actually screw all that. Someone said above me that if they want more than a designer I wouldn't be happy there anyway and that is the truth.

What's next, they want us to also run the IT department and work 80 hour weeks?

Want a IT department? Get Norton Disk Utility ya whore

I work for a corporation doing interaction design. there are many of us here. I dabble in visual and code a bit, but only for my own personal fun.
Design jobs are alive... at least where I am.

I'm currently looking for a non paying intern who know's Java, MySQL, PHP, Python, .Net, .ASP, .MSG, AS 2.0, Photoshop, Illustrator CS 3 or whatever it's up to LOLz, InDesign, Quark, Maya, 3D studio MaX, LightWave, Cinema4D, Swish, Swift 3D. Must be energetic (Basically long fucken hours) You must not have a life, and I need you to be my daily door mat.

This is interesting because we are looking for a sr. interactive designer and in my eyes this is the best job I've ever had in regard to letting me focus on design and let the programmer guys do their thing...
However, we still get quite a few candidates who have worked at these bloated agencies who don't know HTML or CSS and want to finger point to the little guy to make their PSDs look great.
I can't imagine calling myself an interactive designer having no html, css (and able to find my way around Flash a bit) skills. But I'm grateful to have a place where I don't have to be distracted by advanced coding functionality.

Ha ha. I've been thinking about this for a few days now.
There has to be some left...there has to be. I am tired of coming to a company to 'design' and next thing I know I turn back into the code monkey.
I just want to design again...aaaarrrghhh!.
- taragee0
i feel so dumb
- myobie0
so it seems that html + css skills (with flash *design* skills) are expected...that is good...i feel the same way
i hate when a company comes to me with a crappy budget because they spent all their money on developer who didn't know anything about design or usability
i also hate when people expect designers to know ruby on rails, asp .net, java and j2ee development, and php and be able to setup a mysql server
there needs to be some education to companies looking for work that you don't get both in one without paying double or even triple

This whole designer/developer thing pisses me off... At an agency I work at I'm employed as a 'web designer', but they keep trying to get me to do hardcore PHP & ASP programming, because they are too tight to hire a programmer! I just wanna get out my contract and wave the job description bit in their face! *Grrrr
