Do design jobs exsist?

My last 4 interviews went something like this:
"We need a web designer, we looked over your resume and we love your work on your portfolio, lets talk."
I get to the interview and they are like well we need a designer that knows actionscript, advanced flash skills, php, asp, mySQL and we'd like it if you can also work on 10 projects at once.
Do straight up design jobs even exsist anymore?

I'm suffering a similar problem finding decent leads, the last couple of interviews have been:
"love your folio, come talk to us"
"how much pay per click and SEO experience have you got?"
"do you do .net?"
err .. read the cv, there's none. Give me my travel expenses back you cunty timewasters.

Toronto is crazy for that shit right now.
I don't see any congruity between design and programming. Very different disciplines.
respect to those that can do it, though.

When you say 'Design' jobs... what the heck are you talking about? Designing what? Just websites?

thank heavens i finally found one.
i noticed most places what a designer and developer rolled into one so they dont have to pay two people to do one job. but, in my experience you can't have both, either you're 80% design and 20% development or your the opposite. hybrids are few and far between.
most designers who have been designing for a while now have always been like 'fuck developing' cause it sucks, and most developers who have been coding for years go 'gee, designing looks cool, lets make a site with a red background and wingdings for icons' so they suck balls.
true hybrids are rare.
also. we're still looking for a talented user experience designer here. this place is the best company i've ever worked for.

If you would just move to Boston, you wouldn't have this problem. We value designers here. :)

I think design jobs exist, but you are just having bad luck.
Keep your head up

(Sep 28 06, 07:50)I interviewed at a couple places on the West Coast before landing my current job. I travelled on my own dime. I seriously busted my ass with money I didn't really have to get to an interview at a firm who's name begins with 'F' in downtown San Francisco; they spent over an hour talking to me. Said they really liked my work, but that they weren't exactly hiring, and hey, you never know what may happen...and if they did hire someone, it would prolly be more of a design director/CD role.

Yeah, they do...just not 100%. In the digital realm you need to have creative visions, and also know (varies by position/project/firm/everything... how they are going to be built. But yeah, it is unfair when a company seeks a designer and asks for SQL and ASP skills. Very few people have that skillset as well as a honed eye for design. Personally, I try to find a balance in between both. The thing is, a designers eye/brain never gets outdated, while software always does. I still despise ASP heh.
- onewhoslaps0
the margin for finding someone who is great at both has to be under 2%.

A mate of mine just got a web job and he's never even coded HTML or properly used Flash.....I get it but fail to see how ghood he'd be at it if he canonly design the thing and not put it together....

Hmm..this is a good question. I had almost the similar thing going on with my current job. I love the money and people who work with me, but it's mostly based around me changing files into html format, which is not exactly a step forward.

I am glad I have no idea what you are all talking about.
* pops tape in walkman and rollerskates away.

i'm just waiting too see how much this will change now that business dudes are all hot on using design to sell their products. they're going to think a designer can do everything from industrial design to coding sites. they're going to want karim rashid, paul rand and josh davis all rolled into one.
