I loathe coding. I'm doing a bit of copy/paste into pre-existing html files as we speak, I never did like the 'code it now and see it later' thing with BBedit (we don't have d'weaver, being a 90% print & environmental design shop)...but at the same time, I'm happy to help make things happen. Of course, having a boss who respects me goes a long way in fostering a can-do attitude in me.
Our office is small, we have no Project Managers and end up spending a lot of time interfacing with clients. Great practice for those like me who want to open a design shop one day.

The visual, interaction, and behavior within a webpage is part of the web designers job, therefore you need to know at least HTML/CSS...anything else is extra, I think!

I can do the HTML/CSS stuff because I got really interested in it and decided to teach myself, but have NEVER put it into practise for the company I work for in 5 years here. I should say I do some print stuff and loads of branding projects too, so maybe I'm not the 'web-designer' we're discussing, it is the bread and butter though.
I think where I work, the technical department would find it counterproductive an disruptive to the workflow of both our departments if I were to start coding the front end of my sites. From their perspective our CMS is so tied up in how the sites are built that they would be pulling everything apart anyway to get it built, and from the designers perspective by the time I've finished comping one site I'm already doing 3 more, so it would hold us up.
Its just the way things have worked out with us I suppose. I'd love to be more involved with teh build personaly, cos designing the things has gotten pretty stale for me, but I am that ellusive

CSS/HTML is to web design as Print Process/Press knowledge is to print deisgn
You should know how to go about making your designs a reality, to some extent.
