Any company that expects a designer to know ruby on rails, asp .net, java and j2ee development, and php and be able to setup a mysql server is just taking the piss.
A successful web designer SHOULD however (at the very least) have a good understanding of HTML, CSS, Accessibility and (if they are interested in it) Flash.
They should know what CAN and CANT be done technology-wise.
Theres nothing worse than a Print designer coming up with 'concepts' for a website that are so far out there and outwith a budget, pitching it to the client then when it comes to creating the thing - handing it over to the developers and the developers telling them its impossible.Ive been out of art college about 10 years-ish now and I did Standard Print graphic design but specialised in multimedia (doing Director stuff). I didnt get into html or flash until i was in my first job which was with the now dead BlackID. I was working with the likes of Hoss and Limmy who wowed me with flash stuff and i started to take an interest in that. At art college id also dabbled in html to put my folio together online (we werent taught it - i took it upon myself to learn it).
Im in no way a flash-master or an html-wizard but i know what IS and ISNT possible. and if theres something i need to be able to do, i have a good enough grasp on both technical disciplines that I can read some quick toturials or discect other/similar .FLA downloads and take what i need from them.
There is a new generation of designers comign out of colleges and uni's all over the world though and these are the kids whove grown up with computers moreso than us old buggers have and these are the kids with both the design skills and the technical skills from the outset.
Allthough, i certainly question the standards of design coming out of these courses and the passion for design in their hearts.rant over.

(Sep 29 06, 05:20)Thanks :) I've had many debates with em already about crappy pay and stuff... so I've kinda given up on it now, and looking for another job. Concentrating on freelance in the meantime

I interviewed at a couple places on the West Coast before landing my current job. I travelled on my own dime. I seriously busted my ass with money I didn't really have to get to an interview at a firm who's name begins with 'F' in downtown San Francisco; they spent over an hour talking to me. Said they really liked my work, but that they weren't exactly hiring, and hey, you never know what may happen...and if they did hire someone, it would prolly be more of a design director/CD role.

I generally feel that a *web designer* should know html and css enough to construct the page, only cause that's what the web is.
But I would like to know what others feel about this?
I know some designers who cannot do anything but illustrator and photoshop mockups...
I try to do both the design and programming, but I definitely spend more time doing design and outsource the dev if needed.

(Sep 28 06, 12:16)I totally agree, I've suffered from misunderstandings in a couple of recent interviews where they've asked about my "programming skills" and I've considered "programming skills " to be php/.net/etc etc rather than html/css.
I think a web designer should certainly be able to build the front end of whatever they've designed.

Yes yes that’s all good and well – but money is a necessary evil. I pushed myself into programming being a web designer at heart for the higher wage. Got home sick and went back to doing web design for a while (even doing a MA Graphic Design for the love of it and the hope of more design opportunities), got offered a high paying job as a developer and got swallowed up again.
It’s a fuked up situation where development is paid so much higher than design but what is a guy with a young family to do? Be honest. It does sometimes get me down but you gotta keep your chin up.
A cautionary tale... and I know I’m the only one.

(Sep 29 06, 05:42)that's idiotic. they should understand what's being done to build it, but shouldn't be in charge of the actual build.
I do disagree with myself though.

the best, most successful projects come from when people don't draw boundaries and include the dev's in the initial concepting. I think if someone calls what they do "web design", they should know the whole process (html, css, flash if needed) and not draw a line at comp'ing something in PS.
- jpea0
oh, but to answer the question, i think a straight-up "design" job for web stuff doesn't really exist until you hit a larger agency environment, gov't job or such.

(Sep 28 06, 07:57)Like me ;)
I do both design and development, and I think I'm pretty good at both. However, I've seen enough of job specs like;
JUNIOR WEB DESIGNER
Must have excellent php, action script, XHTML/CSS/JavaScript and AJAX experience.People dont understand what they're looking for - that's half the problem.

(Sep 29 06, 06:06)So you're saying that coders should be able to design? show me one of "the best, most successful projects". and what do you know about the best, most successful projects? you're in fucking st paul, minnesota. you cocksuckers are snowed in for half the year.
- uberdesigner_0
also you looked like Thom Yorke. a wussy if ever there was one.

The visual, interaction, and behavior within a webpage is part of the web designers job, therefore you need to know at least HTML/CSS...anything else is extra, I think!

I'm a Creative Director at a Huge Global Ad Agency, and all I need to know is notepad.

Piure design jobs do exist, just don't expect one at a conmpany with 10 people. The rule of thumb is that the bigger the company the more segmented the roles are. I do expect interactive designers to know flash but not CSS/HTML. But you know on the other side of things you do tend to find particualaly below 30 pople that if you're an interactive designer you can miss the tech skill but have to get into the IA/planning. Roles are getting more demaaniding but that's what makes our jobs interesting.
