1.2 Doesn't seem too bad for a rebrand of something so massive. Not keen on the new idents however, but a massive step up from the PC dance off megamix.
BBC Four has much nicer idents from what I have seen.

kezza_2 - what do you find better about the itv ones. Though they seemed better than what they had before, to me they're visually incredibly directionless compared to these bbc ones. There's a lot more authority for me in these.

As a brander, I like branding. But it seems to me that all this BBC rebranding seems to have created a disperate family of idents. BBC 1 bears no smilarities to BBC 2,3,4, World or the web etc.
Maybe that's what they are trying to do? Anyone work for the BBC here?
The one that they were talking about in terms of excessive budget was the Surf one, which they just had to film in Mexico.

"...hippo one they've had to manipulate to create the circle.
For me the cirle as an extention of a globe works well when it's natural, not CG'd. Just seems lazy."

(Sep 27 06, 06:09)it's a hard hearted CD who slags off a dancing hippo!
but i agree its seems expensive, especially when people are getting sacked all over the place.

Hi Wrongtest...
I just thought the ITV ones have more personality. I think people work as TV idents more than BBC ones, in which the art direction seems to more about forcing a circle than trying to convey something.
like I said, In principle I like where they were going with it, but none of it feels natural. In one the kids are dancing. great. but the football one they mirrored and rotated the action to get the circle. Seems lazy that they couldnt think of all natural or all CG.

As someone said on the telly this morning...
The Hippo is perfect for the BBC: Fat, lazy, eats all day.... Or something like that anyway

well that's nice. god people do like to slag the bbc off don't they!

i agree that the ITV ones are excellent, and they do have "more personality".
but then is a channel like BBC one meant to be about "personality" in the entertainment sense of the word? surely it's meant to be about quality rather than observational humour. or is this where they are going wrong, in your opinion?
i guess that's the challenge in designing for such a client: you've got programmes like Question Time sitting next to Eastenders and Blue Peter. I can see why they've gone for a visual link of "quality" rather than one that relies on distilling the essence of BBC one's personality.

This stupid peorson expects branding to be a little more than ephemeral glitz, rasko.

Branding personality comparison:
ITV
fat oiks with no money or class sitting on a burst couch drinking fanta and dreaming up ways to increase their Giro.
BBC
A bastion of televisual diversity, education in a box, up market entertainment of a timeless nature. Proper people with proper lives, and well behaved children.
ITV sounds like a piece of piss to brand really, in comparison - any donkey could knock ITV out for 400K. Quality takes a bit of mullah, gentlemen.

Hi kezza_2. Initially I quite liked the itv stuff, and they've tried to do something cross channels, but overall itv1 especially feels a little weak to me.
The bbc stuff seems like someone said to be more about getting a feel of quality and depth, through the colours, and the kind of all encompassing 'O'. I think it suits what the bbc are aiming for more than they day-glo red stuff at the moment, but it perhaps doesn't reflect where it really is much of the time.

throughout this whole debate i've been wondering why i've never seen itv, and now i know why.
besides, you can't beat channel four with a stick, and these new bbc jobbies look like they might have taken a page out of that whole number-four-subtly-emerging-from the-environment schtick.
i bet they'll look lovely, though. and i will be never so happy as the day i don't have to listen to that horrid bleep boom ba dum boop geriatric hippity hop business they've been rocking for the past four years EVER again.
so, yeah, i'm in favour.
- kezza_20
I agree that anything is better than tango-ing gits.
- kezza_20
Just disappointing when I know what I can get for 1.2 million and then you see what they do for the same, and it seems a little crazy.

i like some of these ideas

love the kids one

Just so everybody knows - RedBee were behind the ITV Re- Brand and the new BBC Idents.
So its not about budget, or quality of designers - its about the client. Can you imagine the minefield that is the beeb.
Give them a break. They look as good as you can expect for what would have been allowed!!

Now if BBC & ITV could get North or somebody to design their actual logos they might start looking really good (Is it just me or are Red Bee really weak when it coimes to typography? That new 'itv' mark looks so badly drawn)
