BBC 1's new identity

Dancers got a point. Anything publicly funded is going to get loads of people slagging it off, cause it's kind of like being a client who had a job done but no-one consulted you about it, they just went a did whatever.
The BBC is badly in need of a facelift (ditch the Gill Sans!), and if you want it to look as good as the other channels they are going to have to spend a little money on it every now and then.
Having said that, that tiny little pic on the bbc website makes the new identity look a bit shit... well, undercooked... innit

I would like to think we could all reserve judgement until it's actually been broadcast? Seems a little bit premature to form opinions without actually seeing it.
As for the five stuff, I thought the people doing the branding now were actually the same guys who worked for spin who broke out on their own, BB/Saunders?

yeah, because when we think of the BBC we think of big wave surfing. wtf, lame...

I kind of expect Auntie to be timeless - that's why I like the current square, formal design.
And has it really been 5 years since they last changed? Where does time go?

Argh@&#! Stop complaining, you Brits! Come and live here in Belgium for a week and watch our public broadcaster "één". You'll miss your "one" very soon. About our "één": never saw idents that silly and PC (e.g. the marrying lesbians - puhlease!). Although I must say that the restyling was done by Red Bee Media (formerly an Auntie Beeb division, not?) :p

Here are biggish images from all the spots. Click the links in the page for more images. Think they're pretty beautiful myself. They've got a great palette there:

i reckon the spots will look great, be filmed nice and feel right. but why they have to plonk that contrived (slightly uncomfortable looking) logo on top??
- 23kon0
BBC One controller Peter Fincham said: "In an increasingly competitive marketplace a channel needs to stand out from the crowd."

The whole world would continue to watch the BBC even if they changed their logo to cooperblack and didnt bother with 5 second adverts showing daft stuff inbetween programs.
Its the BBC ffs!And yeah its the BRITISH license payers money they are wasting on these little skits.
The rest of teh world gets the Beeb for free!

What's contrived about the logo?
- indian_pole0
has no personality, looks like it's trying to be closer to five or sky one.
- kelpie0
logo looks a little unbalanced to me, I could see the point if all the channels were falling in line with it though...
The spots look like they will be great though
- wrongtest0
For me, it works because the logo doesn't have too much personality, with everything that's going on around it, and the strong palette. Like the way the round 'o' of the 'one' sits right in the middle of the circle in each spot.

hey, they don't look so bad now. Dying to know what the font they've used for the 'one' is (well, not 'dying'... anyways).

(Sep 27 06, 05:40)Just to clear up that misinformation, the british licence fee does not pay for the rest of the world to get the bbc for free.
BBC World (24hour news service) is part of the commercial arm of the bbc which other countries PAY for - this subsidises the british license fee.
Not to be confused with BBC World Service (radio), which is funded by government grant, not the licence fee.
- kelpie0
also, BBC World is cack - 50% of the time your just looking at screen wide ident thingmies saying what time Top Gear will be on in south east asia

I still maintain that it wasn't a well though out idea.
some work well as the 'cirle idea' like the kids in a field but the football one and hippo one they've had to manipulate to create the circle.
For me the cirle as an extention of a globe works well when it's natural, not CG'd. Just seems lazy.
On breakfast this morning they were talking about it. £1.2 million just for the shooting and post. That's excessive. Easy to spend other peoples money.
Still wouldn't change the BBC for anyone else
- rasko40
wow there are some truly stupid peopole here. I guess they should spend the money on new hospitals?
The new branding cost 1.2 million. It's a tiny fraction of collected licence fees, you show a surprisingly small minded and non-progressive way of thinking for people that apparently work in related industries, I guess you don't really value what it is we are supposed to be doing?
- kezza_20
I hear what you are saying Rasko, but I still don't think that they are any good. the ones they did for Red Bee did for ITV were better and cost 400k
- rasko40
I have only seen stills so I cannot comment on them, and I do agree that perhaps they were a bit expensive. It seems retarded when people (designers!) denounce the value of branding, that's all.
- kelpie0
budget-envy, innit?
