I have never claimed to love their music (hence why I don't have the album) but I can see why they made it. The lyrical content is well structured and observationall, their music production is simple, no frills, whoops, and bangs like Oasis before them.
I don't think I will ever buy their album as the life has been sucked out of the songs by the radio.
They did miss the boat a few years back I do agree.
Ah well Another Mercury prize gone till next time

Their music is nothing special but I watched some of the program last night and from what some of the 'judges' said it was based on popularilty as much as anything else.

I caught the end of the ceremony on TV last night and I distinctly got the impression from the judges that they took the the zeitgeist into account with the awards - not solely a critical appraisal of the albums.
I must admit to being quite taken with the AMs last night. It really isn't my kind of music - so much so that I actually complained to the ASA when they fly postered Islington with their profanities earlier this year (yes, I am a curmudgeonly old bastard).

i have studied music journalistics and i see people trying to put across the methods of how and why and so, but i think that you can not write about music without having played instruments etc. music is of course a feeling but it is also something more complex, that is why i like britpop for their naivety and way of capturing climatic changes in culture. interesting point about the arctic monkeys by baskerville, i can believe that they most definitely had help with lyrics as they are so young and experiences as a 19year-old is not so varied. the music is simple but yeah okay they may have help lyrically.
best brit pop/rock bands:
1. s m i t h s
2. o a s i s
3. arctic monkeys
4. B l u r
5. next years big thing???

oh aye, winning a mercury pure killed primal scream eh

lol @ nairn living in islington

I think Bobby Gillespie's more likely to die of injecting mercury...

i think it killed the underground form of primal scream to a sense. primal scream were a original sound then became very mainstream and derivative after the prize.

Yeah, I said that whilst flicking my head back and puckering my upper lip - the stammering excitement I got from using the.. the word zeitgeist is palpable.

Past MMP winners:
1992: Primal Scream
1993: Suede
1994: M People
1995: Portishead
1996: Pulp
1997: Roni Size/Reprazent
1998: Gomez
1999: Talvin Singh
2000: Badly Drawn Boy
2001: PJ Harvey
2002: Ms Dynamite
2003: Dizzee Rascal
2004: Franz Ferdinand
2005: Anthony and the Johnsons
2006: Arctic MonkeysAn interesting mix there.
The one stand out band for me:
M People lol!It seems there used to be a slightly wider range of music on display. Now it's just NME bands, only indie music and nothing else. Not a very good advert for the hundreds of talented musicians out there.

that fannyboz Milo did the same "guerilla marketing" in every city in the UK.
"destroy rock n roll" my ass. shouldve been "copy daft punk and other classic tracks"
i think with advertising like that, if its not in designated spaces and it is classed as illegal graffiti then the artists should get fined for it.
:)

other than PJ in '01, seems to have gone quite downhill after '95...
- kelpie0
funny thing is, clubs were being threatened with fines and closure for marketing like that in glasgow (only with posters rather than permanent paint), then he gets lauded for promoting his album in the same way...

Lets celebrate mediocrity!

I like that PJ Harvey was nominated in '93 and '95 but was up against people that were actually good. It took until '01 when there was no real competition for her to win (ok, radiohead should have won that year). She's kind of a case in point about how the competition has deteriorated.
I'd rather watch BBC young musician of the year any day.
You get more musical talent in that competition than in all the MMPs put together, and all BBC YMOTY entrants are under 18.

Hang one moment there Baskerville.
Did you just in any way shape or form say that PJ Harvey never deserved that award?
- mr_snuggles0
Shame she didn't win earlier while her music was still good. What was her big song in '01, Down by the Water? meh... 50ft queenie!!
- moth0
Her music is still good, just not as good. She's still a cut above the rest though, imo.
