i made a review for this britpop band when they released the debut CD. last night in london they won €29000 prize for best british pop CD. many of my friends at work say i have this obsession with britpop music, maybe this time i was right!

Another thread?
Why €29000?
What the fuck is wrong with awarding sterling to UK acts?

Is all music from the Fatherland KrautRock? No. Please stop using the label 'BritPop', it's, like sooo old century and new Labour.

(Sep 6 06, 04:16)As the Mercury is a very well respected award in the music industry I would say this is quite a sweeping statement. They may suck in your eyes but they are doing something right.
Sorry I forgot that only mentioning non commercial bands that only 4 people have heard of and slagging anything popular off is the "cool" thing to do

Fuckin-A Dancer!

They say the Mercury prize is a kiss of death for the winner...
...ah well!!

I firmly believe it's hip to be square. Fuck yeah, Huey.

Didn't Craig David wina Mercury?
He's had a stellar career since then
- kelpie0
ah, the old, 'you can't like a band cos they're cool' cool backlash.
I happen to think they're shit too, and its got nothing to do with whether they are currently the in thing or not.
- Dancer0
kelpie's doing the old "you can't like a band cos they're cool cool backlash" to be cool
:P

But dancer, the Arctic Monkeys style of music was tired 2 or 3 years ago. They are not (and even they must know this) doing anything even remotely original.
In my mind, they shouldn't even have made the shortlist, whereas something I haven't heard before (take lily allen for example - like her or not) doesn't make it. And she followed the exact same path to fame as the Arctic Monkeys.
You're right it's not to do with what's popular or trends - it's to do with new music... and the Arctic Monkeys are just another lump of carrot in the mother fucking soup!
- kelpie0
beat it with your "you can't like a band cos they're cool cool backlash backlash", dancer :E

no hang on, that was me, wasn't it.

Gotta agree with a couple of guys on here - Artic Monkeys are indeed a poor act.

But can anyone deny the (unjustified?) popularity of them?
Their music is nothing special but I watched some of the program last night and from what some of the 'judges' said it was based on popularilty as much as anything else.
If they only took creativity and originality into consideration I'm guessing they wouldn't have won.
Thats my 50p's worth.

I don't like the arctic monkeys, I've heard their music a lot but don't own the album.
I'm not surprised they won and as much as I want to hate them (with their arrogance etc) I'm still impressed that they got this far and are only 19. I didn't win a mercury music prize when I was 19, or have a number 1 album, so I have to respect them for that. There is an underground theory in the music industry (passed on from some session musicians I know) that they didn't actually write the album themselves, or at least got some help especially lyrically. I even heard that they didn't play on all the tracks too.
Not sure what to make of that, the music is extremely simplistic so I don't see why they would need helo. Either way, I hope the trend for something different comes along soon, something a bit more complex to wrap the ears around.
Not that I care what is 'trendy' I'll still listen to john scofield whatever comes around.
