Oh man. engagements/weddings are evil. God thank the stars I married a pratical woman..she waved off the entire engagement ring ("waste of money" in her words - the money went into our savings account). We had two tiny ceremonies in two countries, just close friends, immediate family, no big receptions, but flew a few people around the globe. Bought nice wedding rings, and put off the honeymoon for a while (more vacation time thing than anything else) but spent four days in Vegas. Awesome time all around, low pressure and we started our lives together with a nice nest egg.
the whole big wedding/big diamond thing is such a scam that has absolutely nothing to do with love or marriage..glad I met a woman who felt the same way :)

I don't have alot of debt - just an inability to save like I know I can. Plus, this summer of travelling to Aruba and Japan (over $3K total) took a hit into my savings account to the point I feel like I am where I was 2 years ago or more, just realizing I need to save more.

American Express is my current card

thanks for the spread sheet, i just saw how much i can save and have left over, but realize i spend most of that on going out to eat a lot , and video games .... not to mention dope sacks

Thanks mg33 that is a nice & useful spreadsheet...
- bgheen0
Thanks mg33...that was really nice of you.
- mg330
You're very welcome. :)
If you have a consistent paycheck that thing is so useful.

i think a credit card is great if you use it wisely. i pretty much make most of purchases with cards. but i always pay off everything every month.
i have citi mastercard, citi amex and the reward points go to the same place. so it adds up quickly.
a good thing about amex is that extended warranty and other services that come with it whenver you make purchases.
i have enough points to spend 4nights at ritz now.

don't buy things on credit. plain and simple. if you can't afford it, you don't need it
- bgheen0
Version4, please read above..i think your view on not using credit is extremely outdated. Why not have your money work for you? earning more cash? You're going to spend anyway...take advantage of the system. This is what seperates most people who are "well off" and those who make the same amount but still struggle by...especially during retirement years.

This is muy helpful mg33! Thanks buddy.

also, take advantage of 0% APR for 9month/12month deal.
you can transfer the debt to that account and make payments without getting raped by the interest rate.

If you have to buy it on credit, you can't afford it... I don't understand how people can rack up huge credit card debt paying like 19-20% interest on it.

(Aug 29 06, 14:34)exactly.
And janne I don't have one either.

jaline,
the answer is simple: emergencies and unforseen circumstances.
A lot of people are uninsured and have to pay medical bills with credit cards...try paying for a simple ambulence ride on a monthly budget and see how far it gets you. people in debt are not dumb, its mostly bad luck and a lack of awareness of their options.
- pepsi0
I never understood how people could get into huge debts, but I see your point.
- ********0
yea, we had a death in the family and everyone was here, but my broke college kid sister was not able to make it for the funeral, i said never fear Credit Card is here
- pepsi0
Another way to get out of debt is finding a sugar mommy.
- Jaline0
You have good points. I basically mean that if you can't pay off something within the month then you shouldn't use the card. Of course, emergencies are different. You could have something for that as well, but paying interest on it is pretty crappy.
TheBlueOne, I agree about the engagement ring thing. I would rather have something smaller or affordable than the usual ring, as it wouldn't be as symbolic to me as it is for other ppl. It all depends on myƩmy partner's financial situation when/if I get married.
