It all depends on myƩmy partner's financial situation when/if I get married.

I never understood how people could get into huge debts, but I see your point.

(Aug 30 06, 10:05)pay for your own wedding. it's easy.
850 for a string quartet? sure.
750 for a party bus? ok.
1500 for flowers? cool.
3500 for a photographer for 10 hours? done.next thing you know you're shitting your pants on a friday night talking with your buddies about how much it's all costing you and the stripper standing in front of you is like 'hey buddy how about a tip' and you find yourself trying to swipe your card through her axe wound to pay. it's easy.

Also, I will probably have a Hindu wedding and there's a necklace used to symbolize it, but not many people (specifically those who live in the West) wear it anymore. So the couple can choose whatever they want to symbolize their union, whether it is with jewellery or something else. Or nothing at all.

(Aug 30 06, 10:25)Maybe for those who have dreamed about it forever, but this is obviously not the case for many people once they get older. Of course, it's one of the most important depending on how long it lasts ;)
- k0na_an0k0
I only have 1 more to go then mstrobert.
Good luck to you and yours and here's to not going insane before the big day!

Version4, please read above..i think your view on not using credit is extremely outdated. Why not have your money work for you? earning more cash? You're going to spend anyway...take advantage of the system. This is what seperates most people who are "well off" and those who make the same amount but still struggle by...especially during retirement years.
bgheen
(Aug 30 06, 09:56)call me outdated or progressive but someone elses inablitity to maintain a balance in the black is not my fault or concern for that matter
i bet money m,arbles to chalk, some of that money being spent is to "keep up appearances" and "fit in" possibly even used to "impress" someone of the opposite sex
i've lived in la, sf, and wichita, never once got a credit card, took out a loan or borrowed money to get along
living within ones means is a distant thouht when getting caught up in the advertising we perpetuate (you know the lives on TV are fabricated right?)
your friends should like you either way, not just because you can "fit in" with them in public
sort these persaonal issues first and I'm sure the monetary confusion and overload will slow/fix themselves
seriously, whats so hard about paying rent, cable, electric, phone, and insurance?
other than food, what else do you need?
the car payment? i bet a cheaper car will still get you there.
your girlfriend? if she loved you, she'd pay sometimes, if she doesn't and you are paying for everything, there's a name for girls like that.
your wardrobe? I know how easy it is to buy clothes in cali and kansas, and trust me i don't own a $280 shirt
responsibility will take you a long way, excuses and justification will take you to the poor house
- tomkat0
i never buy stuff i cannot pay immediately
- version30
also, if you are fearing "emergencies" be responsible. that extra check in this months pay period isn't extra, save it, the two freelance jobs that paid the same week aren't a night out on the town for you and your girl save it
like i said already, people who prefer excuses over responsibility, i feel nothing for these people who choose to sleep in a pile of debt.
i do wonder how you even rest with all that swirling in your head

I buy everything business related on my Amex Blue Card. Makes life so simple. Tax time comes, and ALL my expenses are already in neat and tidy PDFs for printing and archiving.
I NEVER keep a balance, however. Only twice in my life have I not paid the entire balance off at the end of the month.
Also, I will not ever borrow money to buy a car (love cars, but man, talk about horrible investments).Student loans and a mortage are what I owe, but them are worth ever cent and I get paybacks for the investments every day.
Credit cards are great, just like guns, it's the owner that is the danger.

Some of the best financial advice I've ever read. He talks in plain language with students in mind. A great place to start.
For mac try Moneydance, or there is an online solution at www.moneypants.com (just try to ignore the comic sans).
I racked up huge debt in college and was in over my head when I first got out and was borrowing money to cover rent for a few months. The most important thing I learned was to track every single dollar you spend. Then figure out where your money is going, adjust and make a budget and stick to it.
Once you've got a budget you can live with, talk to your bank about a personal loan and pay off all your credit cards with it. The interest will usually be half or less than what you're currently paying. Plus banks will always put you on a payment plan so you can see when you're debt will be paid off.

(Aug 30 06, 10:48)hahaha... nice man!
after we get back from the honeymoon we're going to pay off what we can with the money we got, the rest i'm planning on doing a balance transfer to a 0 interest card for 12 months with a cashback bonus award plan. discover has a really good card right now that i'm looking in to.
- mg330
growing up socks, doesn't it?
With credit card crap, you can no longer get away with "Oh, I'm a dumb college student, what did I know?" anymore.
