ah San Fran ... Marin County.....
where you sit around in the backyard with a spectacular view of Mt. Tam and talk about the serial killers you went to school with....

people tend to be more similar than the same. you meet good people and shitty people everywhere. what city they live in has little to do with it.
get over your geography.

"visit both and decide."
we have, but there's always more to a city than what you can find out in a weeks visit...

I would say loo into what you can afford in both and how you would get around, cause in LA LA you need a car. In SF not so much but cabs can add up.

wow... after a few days in LA i knew i'd never want to live there.

(Nov 9 05, 11:48)the less people the better. Now I won't fight for tickets to see the stars homes.

I am just poking fun at LA, although I have met people like that plenty there - I didn't need movies... just went to parties.
I tried to live there but the place was like a disease to me. Yeah, I met some cool people, but most of everything around seemed so superficial and insincere.
So I don't like it... some do.
Keep on Truckin

sf: big city but can get around w/out owning a car for the most part. more community feel attached than LA. lots of new technology development happening in and out (think why google chose sf for free WiFi). less attached from plastic culture (as in cosmetic surgery, etc.). if you get tired of concrete jungle, nature is only a few minutes to hours away (ski, hiking, swimming, etc.). closer to better wineries.
LA: big. plastic. hollywood. maybe more media related jobs and cheaper to live. gotta own a car and willing to spend hours sitting in your car going nowhere.

if u dont mind surfing in colder weather theres SANTA CRUZ.
the SF Bay Area is alot more relaxed than LA, i would say that is one of the bigger selling points.

SF = hippies
LA = titties

I am honestly surprised on how these peeople really don't like LA. It's kinda funny. You all make it sound so detached and odd. And I have a completely opposite view. You all make it sound like we here in LA are out to get you out of towners. You forget most of LA is made up of out of towners. You should drive around here after christmas when evryone go's 'home' itas so dead. Its so awsome. The streets are mine for the grinding.

ive been in LA for 27 years or so. i have a love-hate relationship with it. but the advantage to it being so big is that you can AVOID the people you hate, and form your own little niche. of course, it took me a decade to feel comfortable with my niche and community.
if you're looking for more instant gratification, go to SF. its better for photography, too.
and whats wrong with asking about peoples' jobs at parties? :) i love doing that, its so fun! lots of great networking in LA..its almost impossible not to get a job once you are in the buiz.

i think KILLputer watched swingers aone too many times...
or has only hung out in pacific palisades...
I don't know much about SF, except that is supposed to be amazing in every aspect except weather.
i do know about LA, however, so here's my 2 cents:
a very thriving art scene, a great music scene, endless good bars/restaurants, something to do every night, a million little cities / neighborhoods to explore, great museums & better galleries, great weather, tons of jobs/money to be made. beautiful women.
beaches, mountains desert all within reach.
on the not so good tip:
traffic! you have to drive everywhere, and it is not fucking fun. traffic is atrocious all the time. try to live near where you work, but nobody lives where they want to be for a while in LA, it takes a long time to "figure out"
some very culturally bankrupt communities (they are definitely there, but you have to know where to be) - there are a whole lotta shopping malls, tourist districts. as a whole, LA doesn't have a city vibe... it's quite obvious that it is a bunch of smaller cities annexed into this complex "city".
some very pretentious and/or flaky people - mainly the "industry" folks. realistically it just comes with the territory of living in a desirable place. there are also a lot of people that really really want to make it in hollywood - and they are pretty annoying, and end up jaded.
some neignborhoods are pretty ghetto, (un)fortunately, there is a ton of cool stuff going on in these neighborhoods, parties, art shows etc. it's nice to see young people contibuting to reviving the hoods, but it can also get you in trouble (a friend got pistolwhipped and robbed outside of a show last week). you really have that in any city worth living in though.
it's easy to hate LA while sitting in traffic, but there honestly is a whole lot to love.

Never saw "Swingers" someone from LA told me it was a good movie though.
I agree a lot with what you say about the overall viewpoint of LA.
I just found more bad than good there and saw no point in paying 10 times more to live it.
Good luck.
