ive been in LA for 27 years or so. i have a love-hate relationship with it. but the advantage to it being so big is that you can AVOID the people you hate, and form your own little niche. of course, it took me a decade to feel comfortable with my niche and community.
if you're looking for more instant gratification, go to SF. its better for photography, too.
and whats wrong with asking about peoples' jobs at parties? :) i love doing that, its so fun! lots of great networking in LA..its almost impossible not to get a job once you are in the buiz.
