  take the bike with you. I keep my bike in my office, and in my apartment. If you have to lock it up outside (bar, grocery store?) put it in an obnoxiously visible place. hopefully that will detour the savages a little. also, i use one of those mini U's. it doesn't allow much room for breaking the lock, and it fits perfectly in nearly every back pocket i wear.
