I have been to the Baja twice, both times starting south and driving north most of the length of the baja.
Beautiful, amazing... Entirely safe. There is practically no one there through most of the baja.
If you visit any cities, small or large, it is like any city—just take care of yourself and practice common sense.

jaz, i think you should try liberia. nothing better than 12-year-old kids dressed in wedding gowns, hopped up on hallucinogenic drugs and toting ak-47s like they were teddy bears.

I just got back last night from a week guadalajara visiting a friend.....a WONDERFUL trip.
i was in pleanty of bars, and had no problems. Also went to the markets without worrying. Just be mindful of your wallet (put it in a front pocket, or inside your jacket, etc..., and you shouldn't have any problems. just like any city -

What does Baja have to do with Mexico City? They're like 400 miles from one another.

you're quite right jazx,
and we went quadbiking like maniacs in the dunes:

figured clint, hey didn't we talk before about South Africa or something...?
anyway you'll be fine in Mexico man. and nice pix! I lived in a small town called Uis, maybe you guys went and visited Sptizkoppe and Brandberg Mountain the second highest point in Africa.

jan/dec is a decent time to go. The surf is not in peak swing at that time—if you’re interested—but the climate is good.
That price seems fine, we almost pay that much from the states sometimes.
Go for it—you wont regret it.
I highly suggest renting a car and heading up the highway. Nothing out there but mountains, the ocean, and cactus—but that does appeal to some people. You can drive along the highway, looking for beaches that look like they might be nice, then just pick a sand road and barrell down it to not get stuck... lots of fun...

yes, i think we did.
we visited a mate who lives in windhoek to start with, then travelled with him around the country.
forgot most of the names of the places by now.
but i remember we tried to climb on one of those highest dunes of the world in the middle of the day.
major mistake!
they looked like an easy walk from far away.
in the end we nearly collapsed. ; )i'll definitely go back to africa sometime.
saw the 'orchestra baobab' from senegal at the islington academy last night.
great stuff.

kick@ss man, i'm moving back someday to live

WARNING: Long post.
First of all Nuevo laredo is not that dangerous. I used to live close to that border and never had any problems for 18 years nor heard of anybody having problems in that city. But of course if you were in a drug gang from NL you'd be dead by now.
All I can say (as a mexican) is that it ain't that bad. You'll be alright. Your safety would depend on how dumb or smart you are. Here's a few tips or advices:
-Stay away from ALL FOOD sold by street vendors (ice cream, tacos, fruit, water, etc...) unless you really want diarrhea (WARNING: public washrooms are nasty)
-Don't let people see that you have money. Be smart when paying for something. If you're getting a bill from your wallet do it discreetly and make sure no one is looking at your wallet.
-Don't tempt them. Avoid wearing hats from any professional sports from the US (MLB, NBA, NHL, NFL) Young thieves would thank you for bringing the hat to meixco and I'm pretty sure you would not thank them for using a knife or a gun while taking it from you.
Avoid wearing too many accesories like hats, watches, chains, earings, etc...
Turst me. For normal people this accesories mean not much, just "status". But for thieves they mean "hey yo, dumb whitey alert. get me my gun"-When taking a TAXI, make sure there are other taxis painted with the same colours.
Don't take a red or black taxis. Most taxis are green, white and yellow.
If the taxi has no stickers on it's windows, it might be a fake taxi.
AND, don't forget to write down or remember the liscence plate and/or taxi number.-If you buy antiques or traditional mexican items, don't just buy them as soon as you see them. Do a litle research first. Check other places for prices. Chances are you are gonna get ripped off.
Well that's it. Enjoy your stay.

baja is a pretty safe place although highway bandits can strike anywhere. If you stay with you stuff(car, toys, etc.) generally you will be fine. It's a beautiful area with great beaches, surfing, seafood, and beer. Really nothing like mexico city, where I was this spring.
The people are very nice and welcome tourist dollars, DO IT now!

I love Mexico. San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato were my most recent visits. It's a beautiful place with exceptionally nice people. I've never had any trouble there - even at border towns.

even the hot dog wrapped with bacon, that a must have for a first timer, maybe on the way out of mexico?

LoL
You should definitely eat all the food you can from street vendors in your last hours of stay. That's smart. You get to eat all the tasty dirty contaminated food that we all love so much but avoid, without the worries of using a public washroom in Mexican soil.
* if you can, once you check in at the airport, run outside for half a dozen tacos and a corn with chili, and for dessert get some fruit in a cup and some ice cream.
