thinking about going to baja california for a holiday around december.
just checked out the lonely planet and it comes up with that warning (4th paragraph):
http://www.lonelyplanet.com/dest…has anyone been there, is it really that bad?

by 'recent times' they mean the last 2.5 decades. mexico city has always been like that.
however, if you keep your wits about you and refuse to let paranoia ruin your holiday, you're in for a visit to one of the most vibrant cities in the americas. i love it there.

damn, that sounds scary.
- JazX0
Nope. Only to the Yucatan Peninsula, travelled from Cozumel Island outside Cancun down to the Belize/Guatemala border zone. People, cops and roads get a bit rouge and scary at that point. My Spanglish only goes so far.

Nuevo Laredo is not very safe, BTW. I'd feel safer hanging out with African Rebel Guerrilla fighters.

If you are going to Baja, don't worry. It's practically California...we go around 2-3 times a month. Let me know where you want to go and I will tell you where to eat and stay...the people are great and you will have a blast.
Mexico City is BRUTAL though.

pansies, the lot of you.
mexico is fucking great. nobody's going to kidnap you. pfft.

yep. stay away from nuevo laredo. drug gang's are on a rampage lately. just keep to yourself and don't venture out of the tourist spots.
¡ponte trucha loco!

para you're wrong. a friend of mine went there and woke up in a bathtub full of ice with a note that his kidney's had been stolen.

i've been to mexico city, the girl I was visiting was kidnapped by a taxi. it's actually "commonplace. ".
they'll drive you out to the sticks, take your stuff, and leave you out there.
otherwise, mexico city is awesome. culturally dense, relatively cheap, lots of fun.

A friend of mine went there last year, and they wasn't allowed off the resort where they were staying, as the area was that bad. If they did their insurance didn't cover them...
I wouldn't go there.....

(Jul 13 05, 07:02)you callin' me a yellow-bellied pansie? haaaa come meet me along the Angolan/Namibian border zone. Multiple tourist shootings and kidnappings amongst the European, mostly Belgian, black market diamond dealers. makes Mexico look like a funpark.

i'm not saying it doesn't happen. what i mean is that it's not 'kidnapping' like happens to the scions of bijillionaires.
i should have said: nobody's going to lock you in a cellar, feed you greul and post one of your digits to your dad every week that he doesn't sent them a million bucks.
it's just a rather inconvenient robbery. sometimes they take your shoes. i will admit that shoe theft can be vexing.

paraselene is right though, they ain't comin' after ya' if you ain't worth shit.

mexico is super fun, esp. the border towns. i've traveled numerous times from childhood to adult all through mexico, from nuevo laredo through quintana roo merida, etc.... of course it help to speak the language, but for the most part the entire country is gentile and the people are kind.
viva mexico!
- paraselene0
fuck me. the point is that half the bloody world is at war and the other half is full of opportunists and criminals. you can't let that sort of thing stop you from travelling.
jaz, i think you should try liberia. nothing better than 12-year-old kids dressed in wedding gowns, hopped up on hallucinogenic drugs and toting ak-47s like they were teddy bears.

para =) for the anthology.

Being born and raised in Mexico city, I can tell you that you will find trouble if you are looking for it.
If you notice most of the complaints are from people leaving Pubs or Night Clubs early in the morning. also they dont know where the heck they are while traveling in Mexico city. They are browsing their map in the middle of the street or have a big backpack on their back and a camera on their hands.
People! if you are going to a place where you already know there is trouble, learn your surroundings and find some one trustworthy that knows the city well.
Now a days you dont need to be "kidnapped" to get your shoes or wallet stolen. It just takes a minute for couple of guys to mug you on the side of the street. who is going to help a stranger when there is another 25,000,000 people to worry about?
anyways, other than that, have a safe trip and just be careful and reasonable where you go and what you do. Nothing will happen if you are not looking for trouble.
