I don;'t know what type of fisheries management body they have in Canada. But it doesn't seem like they are managing their fisheries in an sensible manner. although the blocking of imports by the EU and US has probably made Canada make tough decisions to maintain the commercial vialbility of the fishery communities. Although only a tiny amount of the revenue generated actually goes to the native trappers and fishing communities etc..........
they need to get out of the either/or frame of mind.

Maybe a more humane way of doing it would be to adopt the Chinese Method...
Send officials out on the ice, to have a quiet word to Seal Parents...

I don't think its so much the culling or their cuteness as much as it is the age and fashion in which they are killed. Sure it helps that they are little seals with big glossy black eyes. But killing over a quarter million seals in 1mo with clubs and rifles of which 95% of the killed seals are under the age of 3 mo is a little fucked up no matter why is being done. Then comes the biggest argument that the reason this tradition was justified in the first place isn't the truth anymore. They started this hunt because the cod population were dropping off, so they assumed 'cod dropping in numbers..seals eat cod..kill millions of seals with clubs'. When in all actuallity it was more like 'cod dropping in numbers..were fishing the shit out of the cod irresponsibly..lets eat some grass instead'. Now remind me why this culling, raping, slaughter whatever the fuck you want to call it...is a valid idea anymore.

Greenpeace has failed to point out that Gustave Poirier, the seal hunter in the film, later testified under oath to a Canadian Parliamentary commission that he had been paid by the film crew to carry out the seal-skinning. Seal hunters have never practiced skinning of live seals, simply because skinning dead seals is far easier to accomplish.
The image of the whitecoat harp seal is used prominently by seal hunt opponents. This image gives the false impression that vulnerable seal pups are targeted by sealers during the commercial hunt.
The hunting of harp seal pups (whitecoats) and hooded seal pups (bluebacks) is illegal - and has been since 1987. Marine Mammal Regulations prohibit the trade, sale or barter of the fur of these pups. Furthermore, seals cannot be harvested when they are in breeding or birthing grounds

cod stocks have gone to shit all over the world because of over-fishing. not because of seals.

The reason they all suffer low is because their numbers rise continually and eventually reaches a point whereby illness becomes rife and food scarce, they then start dying in huge numbers and infecting others.
Case Study:
Marr Lodge, taken over by the National Trust for Scotland who do not allow any "blodsports" on their properties. Therefore they stopped the shooting of deer on the Estate.
No deer were shot for a number of years. Last year the reports of unhealthy deer started coming in. Eventually they were actually instructed not only to allow hunting again but actually to hire a "Rentokill" type company to come and cull x thousand unhealthy deer.
Deer are now to be shot anually again.
In short, culling is essential to the well being of the deer population.
I'm no expert but judging by ther numbers involved I'd be surprised if it wasn't necessary for the well being of the seals either.

I wish people would look at their eating habits before complaining about this.Anyone who eats chicken that isn't free range really has no reason to mind seals being clubbed to death.
Or those who eat Cod for that matter.
I think there are more pressing animal welfare issues to worry about first.

The whitecoat seal is only protected because they USED to allow it to be killed, why do you think there are pictures OF killed whitecoats?? What do you think happened when pictures OF the whitecoat seals were shown around the world?? People then took notice of this horrible act. Which is why it is now illegal to kill whitecoats (which are harp selas between 1 and 12 days old).
I have no clue who Gustave Poirier is and really it doesnt matter. Skinning a seal alive, as I'm sure it happens on occasion out there isn't the reason why people are up in arms about this.
If you'd kindly remove your nose from Canadas ass you might be able to flip your country over and see where its cummin from..get it get it?

There is no market value on seals other then for pelts and other non neccessary perks of being a human. Only three countries will even import seal meat...most goes to waste.
Bottom line...there is no real reason for this hunt other then giving poor fisherman something to do for a month.
