I would argue that activists try to make headway everyday regarding deforestation with governments all around the world. The fact that it's identified as endangered should tell you there is an effort to protect it.

but then the only way anyone will ever know of a species that is endangered would be to have a study into it. Don't confuse study with caring.

Sure you do.
When people fight to have laws instituted to protect open spaces and stop deforestation. I think you're missing the distinction here too, the seals don't represent a physiological need of society, their pelts are just superficial luxury items. That's not a good enough reason to kill an animal.

You're right. But why let society guage what's important or worth speaking out about? Any public outrage/response goes along way in support of other issues. I think the hope is that people will look at this disgusting practice and bring other things into question.
