might be a little off topic but still relavant i think
last year we started shooting whales here in Iceland again because there is so many of them, that they are at harm themselfs.
It's not for our eating pleaure or anything, but for the whales own good only, but still there was a big fuzz about it, and some gheysuits in Washington and in the rest of the world + Greenpeace where all crazy and worked up about it..
But truth is, they did have a fucking clue what it was all about... and rightfully they where told to fuck off and mind their own buisness by the icelandic goverment..
maybe there is a reason here too..

the question here (and there's a pretty good comment thread going on on BBC) is should the government step in to control animal population (with an exception of controlling human population, but lets not get into that subject, shall we?)
one side says there are too many of seals and threatening the cod population.
the other side says there's no scientific proof to it and it's just not humane.
for one, i do believe that clubbing an animal is inhumane.
for two, i am not a big fan of human involvement in attempting to control animal species by killing them - ecosystem is complex enough and i feel we just don't have enough data to justify it. it is possible that cod population might rise by controlling seal population - but what if cod population increases SIGNIFICANTLY this/next year? i'm afraid what impact that might have.and polar bears/killer whales eating seals - well they definitely don't kill 300,000+ seals in one week, do they?

posted this in the other thread already. Some good information for both sides of the argument including some numbers.
Those who don't know it, CBC is decently objective Canadian journalism, and not corporately owned I don't think...

The thing is - cows aren't killed just so we can wear shoes

"culling" is exactly what it is.
It's population control, same as gets done in Scotland with deer.
If you don't do it they all suffer.
Yes it should be done humanely and not by sadistic knuckle dragging monsters. But they certainly should be culled, there's absolutely no question about that.
