the question here (and there's a pretty good comment thread going on on BBC) is should the government step in to control animal population (with an exception of controlling human population, but lets not get into that subject, shall we?)

one side says there are too many of seals and threatening the cod population.

the other side says there's no scientific proof to it and it's just not humane.

for one, i do believe that clubbing an animal is inhumane.
for two, i am not a big fan of human involvement in attempting to control animal species by killing them - ecosystem is complex enough and i feel we just don't have enough data to justify it. it is possible that cod population might rise by controlling seal population - but what if cod population increases SIGNIFICANTLY this/next year? i'm afraid what impact that might have.

and polar bears/killer whales eating seals - well they definitely don't kill 300,000+ seals in one week, do they?
