Hello Fella
We also used to have this problem but now our cat is very well behaved. This is what we did.
Take a rolled up news paper and when ever you see the cat going fo ra scrath... hit the part of the furniture about to be de-threaded really hard. This noise is enough to scare them ... but not hurt them. Apparently the hate loud noises, and so they learn to stay away from those areas... Honestly... it sounds weird but it really works. Takes i bit of time for it to hit home with the felines as well. A wek or so of trying should work.

Yeah, We got them one of those too, but they just used it as their secondary scratcher.

i also clip their front claws. if the claws are properlly trimmed, they're too dull to do any real damage.
once a week. the cats hate it, but it keeps them from clawing the shit out of things...like me.

Not read any responses yet, but I can relate.
My cat still has her front paws (hahaha, I mean claws!) and she is probably about 3 years old. I have resisted getting her declawed because it is rather inhumane to them.
It is literally like cutting a human finger just beind the first knuckle from the tip.She actually has somewhat outgrown scratching the couch. I have one of those cardboard floor scratchers, and she has a scratching post/tower she plays on. She loves scratching on cardboard, so I keep some around here and there.
My main problem with her is her hair getting everywhere.
I think the day will come that I have to get her declawed. Whenever my GF and I are married and living together one day, we'll have nicer stuff and she is afraid of furniture getting ruined.
I have seen that there is laser declawing now, you might look that up.Best of luck. Do whatever you can to not have to get rid of them. I hate the thought of not having my cat for her whole life.

it sounds funny, but declawing can cause emotional damage to the cat.
it can become mean, violent, withdrawn, etc.
it really isn't good to do.
the shedding is the only thing that i hate. cat hair everywhere. i have to vacuum all the time.
get the dyson animal vacuum...thing's a bad ass.

Thanks MG33 - We are going to try a few more things and see what happens.
If only you could tell them that if they don't stop you're giving them away!

you have a couple options.
1) spray bottle when they start to do it.
2) double sided tape on the sofa/furniture. unsightly though but effective.
3) i can't remember exactly what, but some sort of pepper, or spice can be put on the furniture (that doesn't stain or smell) and when the cats go to claw it they smell it and bug off. For the life of me i can't remember what it is though. maybe even hot sauce. shite. i think someone actually posted it here before.
now that i'm thinking of it, i posted a while back about getting a cat and someone mentioned it in that thread.

Have you tried talking with him about it?

Spraying water at them helps... do it each and every time they scratch at the furniture and sooner and later they will relent.
My sis raps the kitty's nose softly whenever he does something disagreeable, and it normally works.
Best of luck with your cat.

Yer cat is just pissed that you buy better furniture fer yerself than you do fer yer cat... i bought a huge kitty condo and they almost instantly stopped shredding my sofas.
get something like this
also, keep water guns around the house... i have like 5 ready to go.
and buy a spray called "Boundary"? or Green Apple...

put large mittens over their paws. or, maybe even moon boots.
