you have a couple options.
1) spray bottle when they start to do it.
2) double sided tape on the sofa/furniture. unsightly though but effective.
3) i can't remember exactly what, but some sort of pepper, or spice can be put on the furniture (that doesn't stain or smell) and when the cats go to claw it they smell it and bug off. For the life of me i can't remember what it is though. maybe even hot sauce. shite. i think someone actually posted it here before.
now that i'm thinking of it, i posted a while back about getting a cat and someone mentioned it in that thread.
