My finace and I just bought our first house, and with it we bought our first set of real furniture. The problem is our cats are already starting to pick at the sofas. We have tried various products to stop cats from scratching, but so far they are not working too well. So our options are - keep them locked in the basement for the rest of their lives, or give them away. We don't want to do either because we love them. Does anyone have any advice? This is a very sad issue for us.

this really works. get one of those cardboard scratchers at Target. It's just made of corrugated cardboard and comes with catnip that you sprinkle on it. worked for my two scratchers like a charm.
plus they freak out on the catnip and act like they on good X or something.

it's rough. you basically have to choose between your pets that you love and adore or having knackered furniture for the rest of your life.
there's maybe one thing that you could try:
water pistol kitty brainwashing
that works for a lot of different behavioural aberrations.

double sided tape. put it on the places they try to scratch for a while...it irritates their paws enough to make them stop.
i use it on powercords, cables, etc.
and, a scratching post/mat and some nip always works.
our two cats never claw furniture.
declawing is cruel.

my cats hate the smell of citrus.. so i found some citrus scented lysol.. and sprayed it around the areas they were trying to claw at.. they get one whiff and bolt like it's poison... (lemon or orange usually works)
they also make stuff specifically for this at the pet store.. to spray and get them away..

We've done the Double sided tape - They ripped it off. We tried the spray but didn't really have any effect on them. And we got these things called soft paws, they are little plastic claw covers, but the one cat just chewed them off.

damnation.

i use softpaws on our 2 cats and it works pretty darn good. yeah they chewed them off the first couple of times but now they don't pay any attention to them. The softpaws do come off as they shed their nails you just have to pay close attention and replace them as needed.
in other words, you'll need to break their will.
