Hello Fella
We also used to have this problem but now our cat is very well behaved. This is what we did.
Take a rolled up news paper and when ever you see the cat going fo ra scrath... hit the part of the furniture about to be de-threaded really hard. This noise is enough to scare them ... but not hurt them. Apparently the hate loud noises, and so they learn to stay away from those areas... Honestly... it sounds weird but it really works. Takes i bit of time for it to hit home with the felines as well. A wek or so of trying should work.
