Yeah, the preloader seems a little odd, but maybe that's a part of the "disruption" branding.

maybe we are all getting a bit too bitter about the design industry. i know i am.
i used to get so excited about design. now, i don't know anymore. i feel worn out, tired and feeling less creative.
oh well. life goes on.
- DutchBoy0
we get older.
you will feel worn out about anything!
live with it, damnit!
anyway, i used to get excited about michael jackson.

I feel the same way tk. But this place usually puts things in perspective in a lot of ways.

I don't think this thread is dead quite yet, it's the only thing interesting on here.
anyways, i missed out on this mornings discussion. My 2 cents:
I think a portfolio is an expression of the creator, but you need to be selective. Figure out who your audience is and what they are looking for.
Many portfolios, especially design related, contain too much work. You gotta show em the good stuff and cut the crap (or at least bury it in your site so it takes some digging). I think too many start up designers are anxious to show everything and come off as sloppy by doing so.
imo.

true that, mr_snuggles.
i need some inspiration, maybe i just need to stop trying too hard.

I agree ric, personally I think my site has too much work that isn't ace, but everything has it's reason. I like to showcase the varying types of clients I've worked with and how diversely I've treated those jobs, even if the final results aren't amazing. Again, it's something to talk about when you're in an interview. I always talk about why the project turned out the way it did and how I would've dealt with it differently.

i used to showcase a lot more work than i do now.
then i cut down all and narrowed it down to 10 or so projects. if i can't convince clients with those, it just means i haven't done well enough. then again, this is relative because we all use our portfolio site in different way.
from my own experience, many clients/employers are sold on the brand names and companies i worked on. that alone is enough for them. it's pretty sad. there are only a few who people who see beyond.
also now days, all the projects i get comes from people i know recommending me to people they know. it's like a clique. if you are in, you are in. this makes extremely hard for newbies to break in.

no doubt, it's really difficult to start up.
It's like looking thru a glass window... you can see the action, you just can't get any.
Its all about perseverance (I think I spelled that right).

and the funny thing is, once you are in, all you can think of is getting out. all the things that you thought you wanted, you don't want it anymore. is this just me or anyone feeling the same?
then again, i am glad to have a paying job. i guess you just can't win win.

Great thread people. One more thing about this. You have to look at design and how it relates to our cultural and what's happening everywhere. Take for instance the big dotcom boom. You saw alot of busy/hi-tec work coming out becasue of the influence of the technology craze. Everything had pixel crap all over the place. Swooping logos, abstract 3D shapes, big Flashy intros, etc. But now that things are maturing in our field and the internet in general, things have quieted down and design is becoming smarter and sometimes simplier. In the case of better organized content, good concepts, smarter use of flash, so on and so forth.
So in the instance of whether your persoanl site is vertical scroll or multi-layered, it should be well thought out and be a unique reflection of you. A designer.

That's actually a great summation and a nice way to end the day, d5ive!

yup, agreed.
- ricstultz0
totally, way to wrap it up.
...and yes being on the inside is somtimes worse than the outside. It can get a bit stuffy.
- d5ive0
I don't want that to end the thread. It's just that we are a direct reflection of everything around us. No matter how we try and deny it. But we're also a direct influence. Now I'm starting to sound like Buddha.
- mr_snuggles0
I just don't know how much more can be said about the topic. I think it's all been pretty much summed up, but it'd be nice to have an ongoing "portfolio" thread for personal shizza...

I personally don't like it. ABC was really fresh a few years ago, still solid work, I just don't care much for it now...sorta like Volumeone, if I can say that here...
