Great thread people. One more thing about this. You have to look at design and how it relates to our cultural and what's happening everywhere. Take for instance the big dotcom boom. You saw alot of busy/hi-tec work coming out becasue of the influence of the technology craze. Everything had pixel crap all over the place. Swooping logos, abstract 3D shapes, big Flashy intros, etc. But now that things are maturing in our field and the internet in general, things have quieted down and design is becoming smarter and sometimes simplier. In the case of better organized content, good concepts, smarter use of flash, so on and so forth.
So in the instance of whether your persoanl site is vertical scroll or multi-layered, it should be well thought out and be a unique reflection of you. A designer.
