I think non design is just a rebellion from designers against the clean machined graphics to show there is a human process, vernecular imagery has and will always be part of a designers repertoire as we are all visual people.
It is a fashion at the moment to make things look like they are straight from the scetchbook, showing off flaws etc, but because of the industry nature of our work like all fashion it won't be long lived.

advertising kills graphic-design in my opinion. it takes a trend and reproduces it 1000000 times. i see this every day. sell out. sometimes it hurts bad.

i posted this thread after i read a review(in last months Grafik) about a European design exhibition which had a sign at the entrance stating; "Design heas never been so exciting" or something along those lines while they appeared to be lacking anything worth for society's hard times, like these days. Design is about great ideas, solving problems, not to sell another wedding gown or even more of the same sports shoes.

In all seriousness - there are so many different levels of design and so many disciplines of it...I wouldn't know where to start answering this.
What is design?
