Hmmm, an idealistic view.
Well, i expect we'd all like graphic design to be a little closer to fine art, in terms of the designer becoming more powerful. So the designer or creative isn't bound by the marketing department or the sales department, or just some dickhead CEO who likes tuquoise!
I think we'd see a lot of exciting angles for (sigh, i know) selling things. We also get more interesting things to sell or promote if left to our devices.

I think possibly my favourite graphic design is for music & books, there the design is almost as important as the other artform it's representing. You tend to get interesting design for other arts, galleries exhibitions etc too. Hmm, i'd like to do that actually.
