someone in an earlier post said something to the effect of:
what design have you done lately that has changed or had the potential to change the world?
and noone responded.
But all of the romantic talk about designs that changes the way people think and noone responds to that, interesting.

great.
maybe a antwerp delegation isnt a bad idea. You, Crabbie & some other fellas that hang around here every once & a while.

most of the design I see is changing the way people think...
...changing which mobile phone they buy and thats about it.
and most of the designers that do pieces that have an underlying message (no commercial purpose) display them only in places that other designers will see them, not the general populace. It turns into more of an ego-stroke than anything else, in my opinion.
like, "Check me out, Im really deep"

People we're designers, you want to do fine art crap go and paint pictures or some shit. I've sold my soul and I did it cos I want money.
Can design change the world? Lets face it, design came about because of advertising, look at the daddy, Paul Rand, he worked in advertising for years. So what're you gonna do?

sorry for the derailing there, mrdob.
on with the topic!
i agree with you a lot of designers tend to design to impress other designers. which is a bit silly in a way.
but I wonder if you should doubt their intentions, i have this idea a lot of (respected) designers are serious on the matter of pursuing a better world..

..oh and instead of simply saying what design was and is, i had hoped to hear some bold daring (individual) visions on where you think (graphic) design should be heading to in the future.
but I am afraid I shouldn't ask for it here.. *sigh*
instead, people blame you for being pretentious, oh well, fuck off.
it can be very refreshing to hear people's idealistic views on their profession...but no, we seem to be here to just do what the boss/client says and have a beer. if that is all, good for you.

I like designing stuff like posters and ads etc because you get to see them in the street, in papers, you know people are looking at them.
It's an ego thing with me, i like the affirmation that other people are seeing something i've done. It doesn't matter if they don't know it, i know it.
I feel as if that if other people don't see what i'm doing (could be anything), then what's the point?Does that make sense?
- ********0
i hear you, Blofeldt.
it is really a part of a lot of designers secret motivation, indeed.
i read this article about a graff-writer who became an advertising/commercial photographer, and one day he was standing in the subway station and saw the metro driving in with a huge ad with his picture in it, and to him it was the same sort of kick as he used to have looking at metro's/trains passing by with his graffiti on it.
