God, those manifesto's really piss me off. The World doesn't change with the publication of leaflets and posters. Graphic Design is not the most important thing in the World. If you want to make a difference go and become a politician, or a policeman, or a teacher or a nurse or join FOE or Greenpeace or go and dig wells in Africa! Grrr!
Admittedly these ideas do have to be communicated to other people, but the Graphic Designer is only the messenger.

well said Blo

does it really matter. Its a job. It pays my bills, it feeds me, and clothes me.
I could get payed less and increase someones revenue.
As it is I get paid well, because I make peoples communication better and more efficiant.
nike, argos, inteerflora, oxfam.
its all the same shit.

"We have to shatter the idea of admiration in order to say, "stop saying it's beautiful. Who cares? Find something that is GOOD for you!" Good here of course refers to what is good for me, for my life, for my growth."
thank god, you took the words from my mouth, sweetasbro. i can only add: amen.

real design = a design that is done like you mean it

its good to have a vision in grander scale about what you do but some times i think that some of these 'designers' think too higher of them selves and their peers.

by 1 week, i`ll become a tramp...

Blo, look around,
graphic design is EVERYwhere.
we sleep on it, we eat it, we fuck it, we shit it, we bomb it, we make it, we break it.
it most certainly is not just posters etc.
think manuals, signage, forms, books, mobile phones, etc.etc.
and i am not solely referring to graphic design in my first post.

Design isn't everything, understanding why design is more important

"its good to have a vision in grander scale about what you do but some times i think that some of these 'designers' think too higher of them selves and their peers."
please elaborate on this. this is interesting.
i for one, try to put my person on an inferior level to what i design. you know why, because i SHOULD (and it can be hard) pursue design that is good, not one that sells me, not one that incorporate the flaws that come from my 'ego'.
design is, in essence, unpersonal.
it communicates as is. the designer will not be there when design is doing his job.

it is important to always do what you want, and sell it so that the client thinks that it is what he wanted. and do personal projects as much as you can. and don't make friend with a trendscout!

designers always have a distorted view of the importance of design.
and lets face it we are no norman foster or eames in here.
we grind out fairly mundane crap here. I dont think people are going to be looking at what i produce in 30 years and think, Ian produced classic design.
the internet and graphic design is a disposable and fluid medium. unlike architecture and product design which is always there.
in the design world, we are the bottom rung in my opiniion

yes, pascii.
but try to step back from the 'designer-client' debate.
you design for an audience, you want to convey a message.
this should be priority.
fuck clients, they don't know shit about design.
you are the designer, you are the expert, that is why they (should) hire you.

Biofeldt, that manifesto isn't saying that graphic design is the most important thing in the world, or that the world changes with the publication of leaflets and posters.
It's saying that designers are in a powerful position with our problem solving skills and understanding of how the media works, and that we should examine how these skills could be used for greater human benefit rather than blindly working solely for commercial gain.

I think design can become too intellectualised, I mean, I think design is pretty simple really, its common sense with an ounce of creativity and a pinch of talent. And at the end of the day if there was one design company for the whole world knocking out Muji graphics for everyone, everything the same, would it really matter either way? Would people stop dying of Aids in Africa?

I'm glad that advertisers actually seek out designer... I'd be more miffed if they didn't.
- Blofeldt0
Really 4cy? Hallelujah, and there's me thinking it was just letterheads and business cards.
Your first post did allude to graphic design, because you mentioned a Flash site, which, I crazily thought meant, a website, made in the computer program Flash, used for the conveying of information through the use of a computer, therefore, screen graphics, ta daaa. graphic design.
- slag_you_off0
may I pose another question.
when was the last time you actually designed anything of importance. (other than to yourself)

Designers are not the only ones to communicate.
Rasko you forgot "a pint of class"
- Blofeldt0
Those sort of manifestos piss me off because they are written by self important middle class arrogant sods with little understanding of the wider problems in the world.
They think they can make a difference by sitting on their arses in the comfy coffee houses of large cities.
