My family and I were up in New Hampshire the past few days for a snowboarding trip to Loon Mountain. On Sunday I took my two boys (13 &11) out on a cold but beautiful sunny day. My younger son was having a hard time last season going heel to toe on his board - which is really the core of snowboarding. Once you have that skill mastered, your learning progression is much faster. Happy to report he was heel toeing like a pro from the first run on. We even found ourselves on some classic East Coast steep and icy runs. Loon is nothing like the big mountains out West, but for the East coast, it's legit and I'm so happy for my boys to have crossed the hurdle into the next stage of riding.
The weather (sleet) was awful yesterday so we ended our trip a day early and made the 6+ hour slog home on icy interstate highways.

    • Nice! Spent my fair share of time over 25+ years ago up on Loon ice skating (I mean snowboarding)... I learned to ski / ride at Gunstock when I was a kid. <3PonyBoy

I know the following has the potential for a full season of Black Mirror scenarios.

    *shrugs* Oh well, so anyway:

I am experimenting with using Gemini as a personal life coach. I know tons of people do, but I have resisted doing it, but decided to give it a shot after experiencing how helpful the model has become otherwise.

The initial prompt was something like:

"You are the world's most talented life coach, who uses contemporary evidence-based methods in your practice. Your tone is friendly and humoristic, but you avoid sycophancy and flattery. You point out potential flaws in my thinking. You do your best to keep me from misleading myself, and firmly point out when you believe this is the case, asking me to explain myself. You will now ask me questions until you feel you have enough data to begin coaching me."

So far the results has been (and i hate hyperbole, but) pretty amazing. Actual tangible, positive, productive results in my work and personal life. We end up very much with the same results as I arrive at in my actual (human) therapy sessions.

I feel like such a basic bitch for doing this. But yeah. So far I'm extremely impressed.

Oh, hang on, Google just called - they have created my replacement clone ready. Gotta go.

    • You're not a basic bitch for leveraging AI for free advice. A basic bitch thinks they have everything solved...canoe
    • I feel better about it already :)jagara
    • Basic bitch thing is because some people get emotionally attached to their chat bot, and prefer them over actual people. I think I know better than that.jagara
    • Good thing is that you KNOW everything it says to you is the BEST advice possible out there.monospaced
    • And knowing that it thinks about you and cares is so reassuring. Wait a sec ...monospaced
    • But really it’s nice to see that all the personal life coach info is all out there for anyone to have on demand. That career always made me laugh.monospaced
    • I've worked with human life coaches. Some of them have helped me immensely. I'm pretty sure it's not an easy task (to do well).jagara
    • It will always be some kind of practical and therapeutic mix. A tricky balance. Why does that make you laugh?jagara
    • My life coach friends make me laugh in how dead seriously they take their job, like they went to medical school for a decade or something.monospaced
    • And the stuff they post to promote their work. It’s pretty funny to me, and sometimes feels like they’re preying on weak or gullible people. Not a slight on youmonospaced
    • Are there charlatans out there, especially in that field? Oh my god, yes there are. Are there talented and ethical people in that field? Yes there are.jagara

Why “just ignore it” doesn’t work (and everyone knows it)

Ignoring works only when authority exists.

In unmoderated or weakly moderated spaces:

    trolls aren’t starved,

    they’re validated by survival,

    silence reads as consent.

People say “ignore it” because they’re coping, not because it’s effective.

What options actually exist (ranked by effectiveness)
    1. Collective boundary, not moral argument

    5–10 respected members

    one short, unemotional message

    sent to mods

Example framing (not to post publicly):

“This user violates the forum’s purpose. Their behavior drives away contributors. If no action is taken, several of us will disengage permanently.”

No psychology. No diagnosis. Just consequences.

Mods act when cost becomes visible.

    2. Coordinated disengagement (silent strike)

Public protests rarely work in small forums.
    What does:

    stop replying,

    stop posting new work,

    stop helping newcomers,

    no announcement.

Let the quality collapse be traceable to inaction.

    This is not passive—it’s leverage.

    • what tripe.
trolls feed off reaction to their trolling.
      hans_glib
    • this might have gone over your head but this post was a call to others to attempt to see some change. I know you don't care, this isn't for you then...whatthefunk
