Im thinking of going to nashville or memphis in the next few weeks. I may check out the mountains and natural areas as well. Anyone live around there or have any suggestions of what to do.

I don't live there and I've never been but if you get the chance and if they're playing, go and see The Kings Of Leon.
Check the bio... weird.

You just missed the Memphis in May Festival/MusicFest/BBQ cooking contest/drunken free-for-all. but there still is a lot of great live music in this town from rock to rap to blues and jazz. and it's all on Beale St. C'mon down y'all!

Go to the Ocoee River and do some White Water Rafting .. that's where the Olympics were held in '96.
near Chattanooga..

Hatch Show Print?

Nashville rocks! Depending on how long you're going to be in the area, I'd suggest...Smoky Mountains. Natchez Trace is also pretty cool.
If you come to Nashville, definitely do the Nashtrash tour - http://www.nashtrash.com - its a drunken, bizarre experience.
For clubs, check out 12th and Porter or the Slow Bar...that is if you aren't looking for the cheesy big haired country cover music experience.
When are you coming?

Ill probably go to either memphis or cashville this weekend or some other weekend in the next month. Im coming form Illinois (St Louis Area) so I would really like to see some of the mountains and natural landscape. I would like to go to Smoky Mountains.
How long is the drive on Natchez Trace?
I read about NashTrash. Do they have booze on the bus?
Any other art or cultural happenings or cool areas or places to check out that only a citizen would know about?
Any places to avoid?
- dbox0
Have lived in Nashville most of my life. The Natchez Trace is cool, but it will lead you in the wrong diection.. it heads toward Mississippi. Ocoee is definitely worth it, and the Smokies are amazing... prolly about a 4 hour drive or so from here. Hatch Show is cool, but would only take 30 minutes max to check out.
Feel free to drop by the KNI Nashville studios for lunch if you're here on a weekday.
email me if you wanna know more

Yeah, Natchez might be a little ambitious for a weekend trip.
Smoky Mountains are a good bet but if you're just doing a weekend trip, might want to do either / or...would be alot to do Smokys and the city too...plus remember its a holiday weekend so probably lots of tourists about.
In Nashville stay away from the whole 2nd Avenue, Broadway bar scene. It's pretty trashy.

Memphis is my hometown and I enjoy going back 1-2 times a year... :-)
I'd stick with Memphis & Nashville for this trip - (Tennessee is a long state, so it would be hard to cover both the West & East sides.)
In MEMPHO: Get dry-rub barbeque at The Rendevous (http://www.hogsfly.com), famous Fudge Pie at the North End Restaurant, and do the free Trolley Tour of the South Main Arts District (on the last Friday of each month). Some highlights there are The Jay Etkin Gallery (http://www.jayetkingallery.com)
and The Robinson Gallery (http://www.robinsonarchive.com...Pick up the local weekly rag for events info - http://www.memphisflyer.com
or find Gamut magazine at a newstand for more arts-related stuff - http://www.gamutmag.comIn NASH-TOWN: Definitely go to Hatch Show Print for a personal tour (http://www.hatchshowprint.com/h... and visit the Frist Center for the Visual Arts (http://www.fristcenter.org), a gallery housed in a converted Art-Deco post office.
I'd Google around a little for more info on these 2 cities. There are a lot of things to do, but most of 'em are hidden...
Enjoy!

I guess this is all the tenn people. Is the job market decent for freelance/FT in memphis or Nville? Memphis seems to have a lot of cool stuff to do. Any places to avoid in Memphis? Anyone live there?
- monkeyshine0
CX, I live in Nashville (moved here a year ago) and the job market is like anywhere...sucky...but if you are really good you can easily get work. Nashville needs some great interactive designers thats for sure.
- TwinLobe0
The job market in Memphis is probably similar to most cities right now. However the creative community is supportive and there is work for good designers.
I would talk to small agencies such as Red Deluxe (http://www.reddeluxe.com) or Combustion (http://www.thesparkmachine.com) for advice on getting work. Being smaller operations, I'm sure they would be glad to talk with you...
In terms of areas to visit (or not visit), Midtown & Downtown are the most interesting areas culturally. The 'burbs might be good for shopping or an occasional dinner, but they're pretty similar to every other suburb out there.
Also, avoid South Memphis - I lived in the city until I was 21 and managed to only drive by Graceland 1-2 times...
- CX0
Thanks for the work info. Is graceland in a crappy area? Are there any suburbs that are cool to live in there?
- k0na_an0k0
nothin but steers and queers come from tennessee, and you don't look like.... wait a minute... that's not right. there aren't any steers in tennessee. what the hell AM i thinking of?!?
nevermind.
- monkeyshine0
TwinLobe...can you recommend any places to stay in Memphis? I'm actually coming to Memphis for the weekend and seems like everything is either way pricey or booked.
How's the artist community there?
- TwinLobe0
Graceland used to be on the outskirts of the city when the king lived there, but now it sits on a strip full of auto body garages & sketchy pawn shops. No reason to go to through that part of town really...
Germantown is the nicest suburb, full of Mercedes & high-end plazas - It would be a great place to raise kids (in terms of schools & such).
If I were ever to move back, I'd choose to live in Midtown. It has a lot of beautiful old neighborhoods, more arts culture, and is centrally located.
*And yes, k0na... there ARE queers in Tennessee, but not many steers. (Memphis has been called the "San Francisco of the South"!) This is probably why it's not quite as conservative as some other southern cities...
- TwinLobe0
Monkeyshine, here are a couple of hotels I've heard good things about:
MIDTOWN
+ French Quarter Suites
http://www.memphisfrenchquarter.…DOWNTOWN
+ Hampton Suites@ Peabody Place - Tel (901) 260-4000Also here's a relatively new Arts resource: http://www.gamutmag.com
I'd check in the Memphis Flyer (weekly free paper) for events info...

That Hatch place looks very interesting. Never heard of it before.
