The job market in Memphis is probably similar to most cities right now. However the creative community is supportive and there is work for good designers.
I would talk to small agencies such as Red Deluxe (http://www.reddeluxe.com) or Combustion (http://www.thesparkmachine.com) for advice on getting work. Being smaller operations, I'm sure they would be glad to talk with you...
In terms of areas to visit (or not visit), Midtown & Downtown are the most interesting areas culturally. The 'burbs might be good for shopping or an occasional dinner, but they're pretty similar to every other suburb out there.
Also, avoid South Memphis - I lived in the city until I was 21 and managed to only drive by Graceland 1-2 times...
