"1. People do stupid things in the name of "Faith," religion, or belief."
People also do some very good things in the name of the same things. People also do good and/or stupid things in the name of reason. Or nationalism. Or because they feel like it.
Doesn't make those things inherently good or bad, just shows that humans are capable of both behaviors regardless of the rationale they tell themselves.
To use religious ethics as the sole basis for a value judgement of "good" is kinda silly, especially as "good" can vary from culture to culture and from environment to environment. (Tips hat to Freidrich for that point)

You did it OSFA!
i'll admit being wrong when I stand before your god, good for you that you're so moderate, but perfectly know what my target is.... it's faith in a higher being, arrogance always leaves a bitter taste

and out, work is to be done

Sorry, that came off way more preachy than I intended. I need some breakfast.
Cheers, Flagellum, all.

TheBlueOne - I completely agree with you.

Fine, target faith all you want. I can take it. But let's leave the sweeping generalizations behind, shall we?
If I am being arrogant, I apologize. I don't intend to be.

Oh Hi Flagellum. I still have you you on "ignore" but just saying "hi" to be friendly and all that. Hope all is well...

I saw most of the show last night, and they unfortunately portrayed a number of semi-nutjobs coming from the Christian camp...most of which had some good ideas but were missing the mark either partially or entirely in their modus operandi.
There was one guy, Greg something or another, who had what I think is the right idea: that the separation of church and state is a good thing (based on the fact that Jesus pretty much left politics alone, as did the ensuing apostles). He also said that he sees a flaw in the way many professing Christians create false hierarchies of sin, i.e. by crying out against homosexuality but not breathing a word about materialism, or poor planetary stewardship.
The people who retreat from society clearly have the wrong idea; when Jesus said that his followers are to be in the world and not of it, he meant, juding by his example, that it is right to befriend the down and out, the poor, the needy, and the hungry...only then will anyone respect us when we speak out against evil.
Sadly, many, many of my fellow believers have forsaken the idea that Jesus came not for the healthy, but for the needy. So, we sit back on our laurels in our well-lanscaped suburban communities and look down our noses at a world we don't care enough about to understand.
It makes me sad. I've fallen into that category before, and I hope it never happens again.
