Freedom Convoy

The “Freedom Convoy” has been marketed as a backlash by truckers angry about Covid-19 vaccination mandates. In reality, there don’t seem to have been many truckers among the protesters at the bridge (about 90 percent of Canadian truckers are vaccinated). Last week a Bloomberg reporter saw only three semis among the vehicles blocking the Ambassador Bridge, which were mainly pickup trucks and private cars; photos taken Saturday also show very few commercial trucks.

The Teamsters union, which represents many truckers on both sides of the border, has denounced the blockade.

So this isn’t a grass-roots trucker uprising. It’s more like a slow-motion Jan. 6, a disruption caused by a relatively small number of activists, many of them right-wing extremists. At their peak, the demonstrations in Ottawa reportedly involved only around 8,000 people, while numbers at other locations have been much smaller.

Just throwing this crazy idea out there...most governments of the world don't actually want mandates, lockdowns and travel bans. They are economically costly and politically unpopular after all.

Most governments were forced into it because we just lived through a once in a century pandemic that killed 6 million people (probably more like 10 million in reality).

Now that the pandemic seems to be receding, most governments are ending restrictions...not because a bunch of truckers held a protest but because it makes sense in terms of public health.

And ironically this is happening largely because of the thing the truckers are protesting against...because the vaccines created enough immunity that the virus is no longer as much of a threat to most people.

    • if that's the case why is JT doubling down when other provinces are opening up?hotroddy

    Canadian Civil Liberties Association

The federal government has not met the threshold necessary to invoke the Emergencies Act. This law creates a high and clear standard for good reason: the Act allows government to bypass ordinary democratic processes. This standard has not been met.

The Emergencies Act can only be invoked when a situation "seriously threatens the ability of the Government of Canada to preserve the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of Canada" & when the situation "cannot be effectively dealt with under any other law of Canada."

Governments regularly deal with difficult situations, and do so using powers granted to them by democratically elected representatives. Emergency legislation should not be normalized. It threatens our democracy and our civil liberties. #cdnpoli

    • It also sets a dangerous precedent to squash any future protests using the Emergencies Act and financial blockades.Milan
    • If you wanted to protest this (rather than the truck thing), how would you not get rolled up with the truckers and have your finances put in jeopardy?monNom
    • Truepango
    • I think protest movements in general need to think more about what the endgame is. If you set up shop in the capitol city and shut down businesses and traffic, yuekit
    • blockade major bridges that carry millions in goods everyday, what outcome are you expecting? You're more or less forcing the government to either give inyuekit
    • to your demands (which in this case are vague and unrealistic) or take some action like this, after which of course everyone starts freaking out.yuekit
    • Which part of the "end vaccine mandates" demand is hard for you to understand?Milan
    • Why would any responsible government alter their public health policy in response to a protest supported by a minority?yuekit
    • But after watching some of the protesters videos, seems like they are calling for more than that..for all restrictions to be ended, and even a new election heldyuekit

Shit I didn't know we had a thread for this!

    1. Trudeau fell into Doug fucking Ford's trap by enacting the Emergency Measures; Ford has done nothing to make sure Trudeau would end up taking the blame just as he's done every stage of the pandemic. The Fed's have very little say over how provinces respond to the pandemic. Ontario votes in June and I won't be surprised if Ford wins on Trudeau's back.

    2. It's not a protest and they aren't truckers. From the start it's been a rallying point for the far-right fringe to cry about Trudeau winning the (totally unnecessary waste of money) election last year, backed by foreign money. In any other country they'd be called domestic terrorists.

    3. Police outside Toronto have so far proven themselves to be either incompetent or in league with these far-right fuckheads and white supremacists, unable or unwilling to uphold the law when armed radicals seize infrastructure and the fucking capital city.

    4. Between the Jan 6 insurrection and this, you better believe people are taking notes on how fragile western democracy is and how easy it is to manipulate society directly. Who'll be next?

    5. The pandemic isn't over now matter how hard cons want to pretend, but it's only still a problem because con governments handled it so poorly from the start. Maybe stop electing people who think science is optional.
