"Ontario Premier Doug Ford declares state of emergency in effort to end truck convoy blockade"

This whole convoy thing is a provincial and municipal problem, the federal gov has no authority to clear city streets so finally the one person that can do something about this is finally doing something.

If this were a popular movement you can bet your ass that the conservatives would still be supporting this shit, even here in Alberta they're clearing the fake truckers out...

    • We're 0:45 from Windsor in Chatham.

Maple leaf flags, conspiracy theories and The Matrix: inside the Ottawa truckers’ protest

“Wake up Canada! You are being lied to. Take the red pill and roll on!” reads a sign attached to the front grille of a parked semi. The concept of the “red pill” – which originated in The Matrix films – has become a token for incels and the far-righters who hold that they are “awake” to the way the world really works.

    not creepy

    • Police trying to prevent illegal gatherings by monitoring the publicly shared information from organizers of previous illegal gatherings. That's creepy to you?zarkonite

    • Just trying to keep things focused. We give police a monopoly on violence in our country. They shouldn't be intimidating people for expressing their thoughts.monNom
    • And that goes for people supporting BLM, or first nations, or unions or climate change. Armed agents of the state should not come visit you for a facebook like.monNom
    • We don't know what she did or didn't do. And what it seems like she did was that she's planning on participating in a protest that has been deemed illegal byzarkonite
    • all levels of government. It has been harmful to the economy and should be controlled in some way before the people start losing their jobs over this shit.zarkonite
    • There have been many injunctions given by judges in different jurisdictions, if she wants to protest there are peaceful and legal ways to do this.zarkonite
    • you realize these truckers lost their jobs because they didn't bend over for a forced vaccine?Milan
    • The ceo of the biggest trucking company in this country says he hasn't fired anyone, he reassigned them to local routes. There are far more truckers againstzarkonite

    • laws, courts and a charter. Behave within those limits and you will be heard. You're wrong when you say these people lost their jobs because of vaccines.zarkonite
    • Forcing people to take a new medication with unknown long term effects should be against human rights.Chimp
    • Any one-size-fits-all solution is bound to find situations where it is ill-suited. The majority's wants don't over-ride a minorities rights.monNom
    • We have a history or the majority doing fucking awful things to minorities in the name of the greater good (residential schools?).monNom
    • This same government just apologized for that... I guess the lesson didn't stick.monNom
    • And in case you think I'm being hyperbolic, I hear on CBC people giving legitimacy to the idea of taking people's children from them over personal vax status.monNom
    • So you ought not to think we are necessarily more civilized now. This veneer of civility can be easily punctured when people are told to fear 'the other'.monNom
    • "There are far more truckers against
zarkonite the protest than there are truckers participating." Bullshit. Do you have any proof of this?
      Milan

    Weep for Canada.

    Government institutes "Emergency Act"

    - Will compel tow-truck owner/operators to use their equipment and labour in order to enforce government directives on pain of fines or imprisonment.

    - Has directed all financial institutions to seize or suspend accounts SUSPECTED of involvement with these protests, and has shielded them from any civil liability for such acts.

    - That is combined with new regs on crowd-funding platforms that require them to provide information on donors (so those financial institutions know who's accounts to seize).

    - Will seize business accounts and cancel insurance of any trucks involved in the protest.

    - Regulation and prohibition of public assemblies, including the ability to select locations (such as Ottawa), where protests are prohibited.

So essentially: forced labour, punishment for free-association and freedom of thought, government decides where you have a right to protest.

Love or hate the truckers, this is a sad day for democracy, and the people's ability to speak truth to power.

    • Nope, none of that is true.zarkonite
    • the illusion of democracyMilan
    • Watch the governments own statements - this is the official press conference.monNom
    • I did, and I read what constitutional scholars had to comment. He literally said this does not change the right to assemble.zarkonite
    • Specifically, watch Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland's and Attourney General Dave Lametti's remarks.monNom
    • Most truckers are pissed at the protesters because they're tarnishing their name, there won't be any "compelling" of tow trucks, they'll be happy to chargezarkonite
    • government rates to tow people out. The account thing is just straight erroneous, the banks are allowed to temporarily stop servicing accounts they suspectzarkonite
    • might be doing illegal activities... that's far from a seizure. ETC.zarkonite

    • to give himself the task of being a dictator, too much work, not enough cool factor.zarkonite
    • @1:01:20 "an ability to compel" tow truck operators.monNom
    • @monNom at what exact time in the video are they saying these things?sted
    • The limitation on right to assemble is within Dave Lametti's statement. He defines 'borders, border approaches and Ottawa' as areas they (might? will?) limit.monNom
    • well I can't wait for you to give us an update with proof of all those tow truck companies being compelled into forced labour.zarkonite

    • As for the reporting thing with crowdfunding. Fintrac has something called 'Know your client' which requires financial institutions to collect personal info...monNom
    • ...that in turn is forwarded to the government. It's why you have to sit with someone to open an account at a bank.monNom

Lawyer breaks down the "Emergency Act"

    A couple of choice tidbits:
Never before used. It is the successor of the Canadian War Measures Act which itself was only ever enacted 3 times. WWI, WWII, and The October Crisis (and it was controversial even then).

Allows for 'Dragooning'. That is the forced labour (paid), of someone against their wishes. On pain of up to 5 years in prison.

    Nothing to see here?

    • Sounds like fear mongering to me, isn't the government just using it to deal with truckers shutting down the capitol city? I don't think Justin Trudeauyuekit
    • intends to sell you into slavery.yuekit
    • The city isn’t ‘shut down’ lolGnash
    • This article talks about armed truckers blockading the border. Yup just totally normal wholesome family types.yuekit
    • https://www.theglobe…yuekit
    • Ottawa isn’t on the border. The Capitol city you referred to isn’t shut downGnash
    • And police cleared another border blockade without incident yesterday. Although there may have been some ‘honking’Gnash
    • Well what's your take on this, you think the government should just give in to a bunch of antivaxxers and conspiracy theorists?yuekit
    • Lol, that’s not my “take”, it’s the truthGnash
    • Of course they should clear the fucking blockadesGnash
    • But you are wrong with your facts hereGnash
    • I don't think I'm wrong that there are quite a few right-wing conspiracy theorists involved, and that they have disrupted life in Ottawa.yuekit
    • But I'll be careful not to offend the truckers moving forward Gnash :)yuekit
    • Disrupted life, is very different from ‘shutting down the capitol city”Gnash
    • And yes, there are a few right-wing nut bars involved, but it’s not the majorityGnash
    • For someone to feel strongly enough about not getting vaccinated that they would camp out and blockade streets, it doesn't seem terribly rational.yuekit
    • Well it’s not about the truckers now. It’s about all Canadians.monNom
    • I post this here not because I know that it will end badly. Just that it is unprecedented and dangerous. Canadians ought to know.monNom
