I've been thinking a lot about the repetitive headline of "2020: worst year, ever". It is like a hashtag. I perceive that it has become a patch cord, a catchphrase, and that it is not analyzed as deeply as it should be.
Besides thinking about my grandpas and great-grandparents -not to go any further-, and the atrocities they must have had to face in the late 1800s and early 1900s, I have focused on myself and what I have lived through in my almost 40 years of life rather than the pandemic and shit.
By no means is 2020 the worst year I've had to go through. I painfully remember much darker and more difficult years, again, personally and selfishly. I have faced depression, addictions, underfunding, unhealthy relationships ... I'm sorry but personally, 2020 is not nearly the worst year I have had to tolerate.
- And still way better than any year anyone has spent in a war, famine, or refugee camp.nb
- Worst...sure it's subjective. Weirdest/craziest year in modern times I would agree with though, nothing like this has ever happened in history.yuekit
- It’s an easy year to hate; talking about COVID is the new talking about the weather. Worse years personally? Sure. BUT globally not in some time...ideaist
- Totally agree. #2020HasFeelingsTooChimp
- Same. Absolute shit year financially but i got a ton of stuff done to my house and grew a lot personallyscarabin
- <Same here. I finished my back yard. Its been one of the best years for me in recent memory. Two new cars, 45 to 50hrs a week woodworking. Tons of camping,...lemmy_k
- Countless hours with my son, and we have all managed to avoid Covid.lemmy_k
- Right? It’s been quite a weird year anyways. I feel like I’m in August more than mid Dec. Covid made calendars go berzerk.maquito

Astrology is nonsense of course but nonetheless found this interesting...didn't know about it until I went to see this exhibit by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei.

According to the Chinese zodiac 2020, beginning in February 2020 is the year of the rat. More specifically the year of the metal rat. Due to the alignment of elements it is a "gengzi year" which occurs every 60 years and is supposed to coincide with some sort of cataclysmic disaster that also remakes the world.
"In 1840, the First Opium War served as a prelude for the transformation of China when it was forced to open its ports and Hong Kong was relinquished to England. In 1900, churches were burned and Christian missionaries massacred as part of the Boxer Rebellion just as Empress Cixi declared war on the United Kingdom, United States, France, Russia, Germany, Japan, Italy and Austria before Beijing was taken in August.
In 1960, China experienced a great famine and it was at this point that Ai and his family reached a turning point. His poet father, Ai Qing, was sent to the Eighth Division of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps in Shihezi where Ai lived for 16 years.
In terms of the existence of human civilisation, 60 years is not a long time. However, most people will only see one such year of the rat in their lifetime."
- Interesting, so after this we're cool for another 60 years?grafician
- them too? Its also the beginning of the age of aquarius. I take these with a grain of salt but a lot of astrologers predicted a disaster year last year.Beeswax
- Wow I didn't know that...the age of Aquarius began this week apparently. 12/21/20yuekit
