As coronavirus becomes pandemic, scientists ask if lines on the map hold the key to contagion’s spread
The coronavirus pandemic that has infected more than 125,000 people around the world is concentrated in a “corridor” across the northern hemisphere, researchers said, as more studies focused on how temperature and humidity could be used to predict the spread of the contagion.
Despite worries that Southeast Asia may become a coronavirus hotspot after central China (where the Covid-19 outbreak started) because of their proximity and travel connections to the infection’s epicentre, more countries and regions like South Korea, Japan, Iran, northern Italy and the northwestern United States may have to bear the heaviest burden.
“The establishment of community transmission has occurred in a consistent east-and-west pattern. The new [regional] epicentres of the virus were all roughly along the 30-50 degree [lines of latitude] north zone,” according to a team of US and Iranian researchers.

Chart shows the coronavirus spreading slowly in tropical countries:
- Let's hope this is true...there's a big difference between some countries being overwhelmed vs. the entire world at once.yuekit
- according to a team of US and Iranian researchers...is that even legal?uan
- Here's the paper they seem to be referring to: https://papers.ssrn.…yuekit
- If it's true there is a downside to this as well which is that new regions could become the next Wuhans as the weather changes.yuekit
- Specifically they are predicting: Central and Eastern Europe, British Isles, Northeastern and Midwestern USA and British Columbia will be hit hard in April.yuekit
- I think what you're all saying is that "climate change" could save us from all this.MrAbominable

- You mean, not are under 3% and probably much much much lower considering most people aren’t tested.monospaced
- *both are under 3%monospaced
- How are you computing that? Recovered cases vs. fatal cases?yuekit
- In that case based on these numbers the USA is close to 90% death rate. Bennn's prediction was true lol.yuekit
- But I don't think that's how the death rate is typically determined. They would look at the total number of cases.yuekit
- only 17 out of the 108 dead americans recovered but in the UK everyone recovered + 5 bonus brits that died from other shit.kingsteven

As a germaphobe, I'm feeling a secret pleasure in this sanitizing craze.
My wife's family, a typical American one, always walks in to the house with their shoes when our son was crawling on the floor.
So many times I caught my mother in law feeding my son with her hands after coming from shopping at a market.Worst of all they always looked at me like I'm some sort of a clean freak just because I told them to wash their hands or take their shoes off when they come from outside before touching my son.
I hope they know learned that what I was asking them was not some crazy protective measure but it was a simple thing that separates humans from living like animals.
- what crap - i'm sure this is why there are so many allergies these days - it stops you building immunity to everyday germshans_glib
- my granny always said "you have to eat a peck of dirt".hans_glib

- I have to agree with taking shoes off inside the house. I don't know what you've fucking trod in or on, on the way here.Continuity
- My dad always wore shoes in the house. and somehow I seem to have a decent immune system. But I now see it as gross...shapesalad

It's pretty crazy how fast things change and how fast you can adapt without even knowing it. Lots of things are suddenly little things and DO NOT MATTER.
Case in point... I needed to order new clay pomade for my hair. WHO CARES! I can think of a hundred random things I might do and buy each week without thinking twice about it. Suddenly that's all stopped and doesn't matter.
We're home with a 2 1/2 year old and a 5 year old, trying to keep them occupied, trying to do our jobs while setting a structure for their day that isn't watching movies all day long. Realized this morning that maybe we can focus on more hands-on learning on the weekends when we don't work, and let most of their week be a little more loose. I just hate that our kids have no concept of how long this is going to last. Our daughter is 5 and she understands; we've also watched a lot of videos about viruses, there's already a "Coronavirus for kids" video on YouTube. Kids just have no concept of "we might be indoors and avoiding people for several months." It's very surreal, but we're trying to stay positive and glad for our situation, while being outrageously empathetic towards others in harder situations. But when you have kids, they have to come first: their well-being, their health, their food, their happiness, peace of mind, protecting them from fear, etc. That's a big job to adjust to this quickly when I'd normally be at work, they'd be at school with friends and great teachers.
I've reached out to their daycare to see if they can provide daily lesson plans, a schedule to follow for the day, and to see if we can set up daily video chats over Google Hang Outs for them to see their teachers. The break in their routine just kills me.
- Weird, that there is no protocol for this. in europe where the schools closed teachers provide all the necessary things to the kids.sted
- I can only see the Hungarian system, and it looks really good, for example yesterday a channel popped up what promises virtual daycare and tips for parents.sted
- and everybody started the week with a proper timetable.sted
- Nobody likes this groping in the dark especially not with kids, but keep it up, you're doing good.
this one is loveley:
