As someone that has probably done all the research you're about to do, let me say:

    - If you want a viewfinder and zoom in a super compact unit, get the Sony RX100 mark iii or above
    - If you want a compact camera with the same sensor as the Sony, with zoom, but without the viewfinder and at a significantly lower price, go the Canon G7X Mark ii. Most reviews put the Mark ii very close to the Sony.
    - If you want a larger sensor, with Fuji's proprietary jpeg colour settings, a flip screen, and no viewfinder, get the X70. A bunch of people have recommended the same unit to me in my recent thread with a similar title: http://www.qbn.com/topics/714589… . If you can afford to go double that sort of budget, then look at the X100T. The X70 is a 28mm equivalent lens, and the X100T is a 35mm equivalent, if I'm not mistaken.
    - You can look at the Panasonic Lumix range, but I the sample pics haven't won me over. At the end of the day, that's what you're really looking for, imo.
    - Check out the sample pics online for each of the cameras above (or other units that rate well on sites like dpreview) and see which ones appeal to your eye.
    - Waste several hours going through YouTube reviews with the exact same title you posted and make a decision. https://www.youtube.com/results?…

    • X70 was quietly discontinued in December.Nathan_Adams
    • no shit, I didn't know that... by quietly, I take it they didn't give any reasons, or any news of a successor?BuddhaHat
    • Its because Sony stopped making 16mp sensor > http://www.fujirumor…Bennn
    • and the sensor in the X70 is made by SonyBennn

Love and use my Ricoh GR2 daily. Great for street and all around camera. Not as big a sensor as the ones above but more customizable and flexible controls for sure.

Love the out of camera jpgs it produces, and one of my favorite things about it is the retro date stamp you can add. I have 3 custom settings on the top wheel. One of which I use for a daily photo journal thing with the date stamp applied. Really cool.

    • The GR2 Mark ii and X70 are a very close comparison from the reviews I've seen, the Ricoh wins out in the RAW dept, but the Fuji with jpeg quality.BuddhaHat
    • That's why I bought the X70 :)mg33

I'll get back to you next week. I've been reading and analysing this since 3 weeks non stop! :P

    • yeah me too Bennn, every time I find myself with a spare 15 minutes, I'm looking at another review, another camera, and I'm feeling the Fuji love.BuddhaHat
    • I just picked up an s7 edge too and I love your pics with your Samsung, if you ever find the time to write some tips, I'd be all over it. Peace.BuddhaHat
    • I dont have tips really...:P I just shoot and edit them with Instagram (no filters). Just the editing tools of instagram.Bennn

I thought that "cubanhaze" died a slow and painful death on QBN, glad to see your back!

  • uan0

hey cubanhaze, thanks for the Show your latest Pics thread btw.

I remember the picture of a girl in the street with the market tarps in the background that looked like wings on the girl. I never dogeared that thread till the link to your pic went dead.

so get a new camera and post some new pictures!

    Buddahat made a good resume.

I've been reading a lot lately about cameras and particularly about compact cameras.

I'm looking for the lightest possible camera that offers the best image quality.

The lightest cameras have 1" sensor, wich is small, but the technology has evolved and the image quality is surprisingly good.

The top compact cameras out there are the Canon G7X Mark II (319g), the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 V (299g) and the Panasonic LX10/LX100/DMC-ZS100/TZ100

But, if you want a bigger sensor, an APS-C sensor (the biggest sensors before full frame) The lightest camera would be the Fujifilm X70 (340g)

Personally my choice is almost made, and i may go with the Fujifilm X-T20 wich is the smaller version of the X-T2 (507g without lense). The X-T20 with a 27mm lense weight 461g for an APS-C sensor.

    • I read too many reviews to count, but a large number said that despite its shortcomings, the X70 was always at the top in image quality.BuddhaHat
    • So it makes sense that the X-T20 is the next step up. X-Trans CMOS III and good 4k video quality from what I've read as well. It's just not so compact anymore..BuddhaHat
    • yeah the X-T20 is in between compact and large sensor compactBennn
    • its the best of both world i think. 461g is not very heavy and fits in a jacket pocket.Bennn
    • My X-T1 with the 27mm lense weight 518g, i would save 58g with the X-T20 and the body is smaller. Check this out: http://camerasize.co…Bennn
    • It's between 10 & 20% bigger on each of those metrics, that's not so bad considering what you get. And you already have X-lenses, which is a bonus.BuddhaHat
    • exactly, i have the superb 18-55mm Fujinon (great lense) and a fisheye i would be able to use. And i really love the 27mmBennn
  • Bennn3

BuddaHat, take a look at this :

    • If I hadn't just spent a whole bunch of money on an engagement ring I would be leaping straight at an X-T20, but I want a camera now, so I think I'll go X70..BuddhaHat
    • and then upgrade when my finances are looking healthier again :)BuddhaHat
    • but if you're in a position to get the X-T20 , and you're already decked out with kit, then I'd say it's a no-brainer for you, mate.BuddhaHat
    • Yeah i guess. I would prefer under 400g but i really want an APS-C sensor. And the Xt20 is a better choice for a main camera than the x70, for me.Bennn
    • congratulations, buddha, did she say yes?Gnash
    • what's with those red lines?mekk
    • red line mean 'no'Bennn
    • Thanks Gnash, I'm just warming up with the purchase, the big day is 31 March, I'll definitely be making a blog post to let y'all know :)BuddhaHat
    • And Bennn, for anyone above amateur level I'd never call the X70 a 'main camera', it would always be a secondary unit for those ppl with lots of kit.BuddhaHat
    • (best of luck, B)Gnash
    • I want the Olympus Pensea_sea
    • You know what, on all counts the XT20 sounds like a great choice... but it just doesn't feel as good as the TX1 or 2. IMO they were worlds apart.sofakingback
    • I say XT1 or 2, XPRO2 or X70... or maybe hang on for the X100Fsofakingback
    • I wouldn't get hung-up on size or weight, these cameras are generally the same size, will take up the same about of space and you will carry/treat them the samesofakingback
    • If you want to really size down, the X70 is where its at, thats why I use that one the most.sofakingback
    • yeah but i feel that for just a few more grams i have something way more powerful with the X-T20Bennn
    • And the lenses. Yea, maybe thats the best fit for you. get the pancake lens and it should be a pretty compact set-upsofakingback
    • The X-T1 is the camera of kings. That, with the 35mm f2 R, it is pretty much perfect.face_melter
    • yup. Benn, I have my XT1 for sale at the moment, just an FYIsofakingback

Canon just announced the M6 last evening.

    Canon M6 with 22mm lense = 448g
    Fujifilm X-T20 with 27mm lense = 461g

The canon body is slightly smaller in size and weight, but with Fuji you have an electronic viewfinder, wich is a big pro.

    • I have the M. Takes nice pics but would never buy one w/o a viewfinder again. LCD sucks batteries and is useless in sun.formed
    • true, LCD in the sun is a painBennn
  • mekk0

I'll get myself a camera for Christmas. I want a compact one to take with me when I go on hiking & motorcycle trips and for daily use, scenery/architecture and people. Only pictures, not interested in video.

What's your opinion on the gear I selected?

    Sony A6000 body

    Sony SEL1018 Wide Lens (10-18mm, F4)

    Samyang 50/1,4 (50mm, F1,4)

    • The a6000 is a great camera for the money. I got one earlier in the year. The 16-50 compact zoom it comes with makes it a truly pocketable camera.microkorg
    • I have a Tamron 18-200mm eith E-mount that I've had since my Sony Nex5n.microkorg
    • Also have the Sony 16mm Pancake and the Sony Fisheye Addition.microkorg
    • hey thanks! :-) Do you have sample pictures?mekk
    • The ONE thing that annoys me about the a6000 is that theres no touchscreen. Even the Nex5n had a touchscreen for selecting focus.microkorg
    • I guess with the likes of our phone cameras we just expect touch focus on cameras these daysmicrokorg

If you want something smaller/lighter you can't beat an Olympus EM1-II. Remember, the bulk of it is in the lenses.

    • But it is $2k compared to $400 Sony..mekk
    • get the Panasonic G85 instead. Just bought it 2 weeks ago :) Lenses are super small.Bennn
