on Morning_star's advice i went back for another look (it's cheap on mondays, see). having had my expectations dashed on the first showing i wasn't expecting a loth and i have to say it was much better as a result.
there are still a couple of sections that need cutting out, and christopher walken still phones it in as emperor, but otherwise i enjoyed it much more than when i first saw it. fabulous visuals, fabulous sound and for some reason the plot stumbled along a lot better than on the first showing.
so thank you Morning_star!
- You're very welcome. A second viewing is definitely the key.Morning_star
- Walken and Pugh were disappointing. An empire of excesses, they should have raised the bar in some way.i_monk
- To hear that Pugh was disappointing hurts a bit. Normally, she's a first-rate scene stealer.Continuity
- Definitely think walken is the weakest part of it. They needed some one with more menace/gravitas.thumb_screws
- +1 Pugh and Walken didn't belong in this onegrafician
- ^ why not try Sienna Miller and Russell Crowe?grafician
- I think Pugh was good but Walken definitly didnt fit in there, his playing and caracter doesnt work.HAL9001
- interview said Pugh will have more to do next movie. like how zendaya was barely in the first movie.pango
- Reckon a Gary Oldman, Hugo Weaving or Jeremy Irons would of worked better. I thought Pugh was ok.thumb_screws
- She was nondescript compared to Lady Fenring.i_monk

I watched Dune 2 twice this weekend. It was like watching one of my kids in a school production - it's never, ever going to be bad. However appallingly acted, technically inept, shoddily produced my love for their performance abides and defines the experience.
There's so much about the film that rocks hard: Villeneuve's direction, the costume design, the sound design, the cinematography, the score, the art direction... the lore, the humour... Giedi Prime, Feyd-Routha, the final fight scene, The voice, the unborn child, Stilgar, Validimir Harkonen... Paul getting all shouty when he addresses the Fremen... Chani getting rejected... Lady Jessica stoving the Harkonan soldiers head in... Riding the Shai-Hulud...and on and on.
It's imperfect, intricate, magnificent, visually and aurally stunning and if you have the desire? somewhere to lose yourself for 3 hours. I want to watch it again.
Silence!
- ok fine i'll give it another look...hans_glib

- haha there was definitely a moment of this where stilgar tells his men that paul refusing to accept he's the one means that he is definitely the onehans_glib
- ^ I laughed out loud when Stilgar delivered that line because it reminded me of https://www.youtube.…GM278

- everyone chuckled in the theatre when that line came up.pango

Watched it last night, it was above average at best.
To be honest it was a bit of a let down, more of a soap opera than a sci-fi movie. Dune 2021 was much better.- Any notes without spoilers (I mean I know what going to happen)?
I was planning on watching it on one of the fancy screens tonight.garbage - The cinematography and sound design are both incredible. Buy the story, script and acting were all subpar, bland and kitschy. Still a decent movie to watch.utopian
- i'd agree. it was a bit of a mess, storyline wise. looks and sounds great, but fuck me it was all over the place as far as the plot went.hans_glib
- and christopher walken did not convince as the emperor, he was just christopher walken wandering onto arakis for no apparent reasonhans_glib
- and was it just me or did paul atreides go a bit tetsuo with that cape an' all?hans_glib
- God, I should have listened. Every time there was a good shot, it immediately cut away into some TV movie shit.garbage
- There was no drive, the editing was horrible, the acting was horrible. It had no energy of the first one.garbage
- It had no business even trying to be that long, we walked out with an hour or so left. So fucking boring, they are 100% paying Rotten Tomatoes.garbage
- You walked out? LOLmonospaced
- Ha yeah, not dramatically or anything. I was hungry and the missus was only along for the ride. For one night, we were united in not giving a fuck about Dune.garbage
- I don’t think we saw the same movie. I just saw it and the acting was superb. Editing was masterclass. Story is as close to an archetype of perfectionmonospaced
- The action and pace was heart pounding and non stop. Maybe you’re just not used to thinking movies, or you failed to grasp the story completely?monospaced
- If that was heart-pounding, maybe get your pacemaker checked. While 1p1m isn't cemented, forcing the editors into a matching runtime has its disadvantages.garbage
- But I'm sure you know that, and recognized that the film was full of studio-induced fluff.garbage
- Or you're just constantly foaming at the mouth at me because I know what I'm talking about and you don't.garbage
- Any notes without spoilers (I mean I know what going to happen)?

I'm going to need to read Dune Messiah now, aren't I?
I think I have them all up to God Emperor, so... aiieee.
- I love the idea of it being titled, 'God Emperor of DUNC'.Continuity

Just got back from watching part 2.
It looks and sounds incredible and gets weird. It does change some things up from the source that I thought were intrinsic to character motives. I'm not sure they worked.
Geidi Prime looks incredible, feels like they have taken some influence from Geigers old concept art and incorporate brutalist elements.
We're totally getting Messiah.
- nice got my tix for Tues night, excitedprophetone
- See it on a big a screen with the best sound possible toothumb_screws
