There was a proposal recently that they just hold the Olympics permanently in Athens from now on. I reckon it's not such a bad idea, seems awfully wasteful to go to so much trouble every four years.
- interesting ...RoyBoyII
- That would be cool. Every country could pitch in based on the number of athletes even.monospaced
- i like this ideaBennn
- Yep, and naked like the first one(s).MrT

^ Would save a shitload of money. So much money gets pissed down the pan during the pitching.
Would also be great for the Greek economy and tourism. One of the positives that a changing of location gives though is the legacy of that olympics. The stadiums, facilities and accomodation left for those communities.
- The Olympics influences cities to upgrade infrastructure, but it's not always pragmatic development. Smart cities don't want the Olympics.nb
- Although I may be biased because of my proximity to Vancouver at the time. Still, seems like Rio, Sochi, etc are seeing this problem.nb
- < Yeah but how much does it cost to do the maintenance on the stadiums, and do they really do the maintenance on those?Maaku
- ^ Yes. As they typically use the facilities in Western countries for events and training. We had the winter Olympics in 1988 and still use the facilities builtETM
- today. The skating facility was built on University grounds, the skiiing facility is public access. Some training has moved to Vancouver after 2010 though.ETM
- It seems that more and more it's used as a platform for less developed countries to show off and become "part of the gang". A giant pissing contest if you will.zarkonite

1/3 of the Russian team is ineligible to compete (disqualified).

- < Never been an Olympics that hasn't reported this. The press LOVE it.HAYZ1LLLA
- And it does not look bad IMO, it's like a hostel.maquito
- Yeah, it doesn't seem all that bad. Apart from the leaking water, gas, and the electrics shoring out. Perfectly reasonable.face_melter

The Olympics is a money-making scheme with the pretense of athleticism and friendly competition. They will never settle in a permanent location when there's billions to be made moving things around, selling licensing, extorting governments, and getting paid by official sponsors and suppliers.

This will go down as the worst Olympics in history.

- some headlines:
- athlete eaten by crocodile
- zika kills gold medalist
- swimmer swallows turd and dies
- entire (country) delegation lost in favelamaquito - It will all be fine.
They organize the biggest carnival of the world every year with two million people per day on the streets.Beeswax - Same as with the 2014 World Cup, it was supposed to be a total failure.SoulFly

Barcelona 92 was cool, though.

It saddens me to say that the olympics are totally irrelevant these days - as is all. Honour in sport - faster, stronger, higher ( for a human ) has been totally corrupted by business drugs and money .
I for one will not be watching
( unless the rest of the athletes take shit loads of drugs like ufc did to bosing )

Bosing = boxing
