Has anybody else noticed how the "upside down" is like Nausicaa of the valley of the wind?
Which happens to have been produced in 1983 just like the story's time setting in Stranger Things.

Love that they use the Oldsmobile Delta 88 for John Byers car. Great nod to The Evil Dead
- good catch! can't wait to see some alien (?) carnagesarahfailin

YEAH! This is brilliant!
Watched 4 episodes last night.Lots of bits will feel familiar to any 80s kids - there's lots of familiar moments 'borrowed' from the likes of E.T and The Goonies. Even down to the likes of the floating toys, introducing the dinosaurs etc and especially the little blonde girl who is totally Drew Barrymore in ET!
It's like a mashup between ET, The Goonies and Poltergeist.
Loving this so much!
The artwork and title sequences are great and the music is a lot of 80s classics and some awesome synth stuff for atmospherics too.
Much kudos to the guys behind this series.
Looks like all us oldies appreciate it but wonder what the younger generations think of it.- Ok I'm inset
- they mention Poltergeist by name in Episode 1, i believesarahfailin

- One episode of Stranger Things was titled "The Body" right? That was the title of the King short story that inspired Stand By Me.monospaced

- yup. a classic.lvl_13
- more originality ;)fadein11
- That's my complaint. It's as interesting as Family Guy is funny. But both are full of nostalgic references.CyBrainX

Marathoned it yesterday. Some episoes dragged in places, but good overall. I was surprised to see they left the door open for a continuation, as I thought it was meant to be a one-and-done deal.
Ryder was underwhelming as Generic Hysterical Mom.
- Def agree about Ryder. She didn't fit for me somehow.SteveJobs
- She was over affected. Glad they left it open for next season.monospaced
- I only watched the first two and thought she was grating already.CyBrainX
- I bet they had two endings in case it was a flopdbloc

I don't recall THAT much hype around this before the release. Maybe I just tuned it out though. I recall seeing the trailer posted a week or so before the release, and thought, "hey, that looks neat." In my experience, word of the show spread through social media and water coolers once it had aired, because it was surprisingly good.
When people have expectations, it usually leads to being overly critical. This show wasn't unique or groundbreaking, but it hit a lot of the right notes, and there's currently nothing similar on TV that hits those notes. Even if you think it relies too much on nostalgia, most of the homages are a smaller part of a pretty good sci fi story. I didn't find them distracting, and was immersed the entire time.
I don't think this show has good replay value, it is a one and done for me. The story was concise, and I liked the ambiguity of it all. It didn't need a nice bow at the end to tidy everything up. Overall, I would give a solid 8/10.
- yep - the social media hysteria that is so rampant these days - the herd enjoying things because they feel they ought to. It was pretty good though, not notfadein11
- just not as good as people seemed to think. @set - did you love it? Would love to hear your opinion.fadein11
- immersed the whole time? 60% of it was filler.fadein11
- Not sure how you arrived at 60%, but I get distracted easily if a show bogs. I didn't get that feeling at all.DRIFTMONKEY

Watched it all. Was good / okay but by no means the best thing ever. I preferred True Detective season 2 actually!
- Yeah. Bananas are pretty good but I really prefer a good burger instead. ;)monospaced
- Yeah, I would take True Detective season 2 over this. And sorry, Mono, I would take bananas over burgers.CyBrainX
- Everyone's been wanking over this so much that i almost want to not like it just to be a contrarian!DaveO
- @CyBrain, that was my point. You can't really compare them, because they're completely different foods, just like those are different shows. It's pure opinionmonospaced
- True Detective Season 2 ?!? LOLRamanisky2

- yep agree. it's like mass hysteria when a show goes viral on social media - everyone thinks they ought to like it. Bizarre.fadein11

- I think the real question is: why would that bother you? What about those actions makes you take it personally? Not trying to fuck with you. fyisofakingback
- After all, its a good show, good music, etc. why wouldn't it be ok for people to enjoy it? I showed it to my parents and they loved it. Same with other friends.sofakingback
