Strange world we live in where the progressives prefer global banking elite ruling over national democratic self-governance.

    • I agree but the problem is uk doesn't have the leaders/rulers to be able to handle this transition.mugwart
    • national democratic self-governance sounds good on paper. we've just shat on our paper.Fax_Benson
    • Gross over-simplifications about complex issues like this post can help explain why the UK just voted to cripple itself.nb
    • Right, because labeling half a country racist, xenophobic idiots is the rational way of looking at complex issues.IRNlun6
    • Varoufakis would agree with this "oversimplification"pr2
    • They did already have national self-governance, just with some compromises in exchange for economic access.yuekit
    • It's really economists and classical liberals that would most strongly favor trade deals and trading blocks like this, rather than "progressives" whatever thatyuekit

for some reason I started a strange conversation about William Rees Mogg in the UK elections thread. Whilst looking for a link re that topic, I discovered the names of his kids are even more Rees Mogg than I could have imagined.

can anyone give me one good thing that's come out of brexit? i can't think of anything

ok so we have annoyed the french fisherman which i suppose will give some ukippers a hard on, but really is that it?

i guess the paperpushing jobsworth bureaucrats will be really happy as they can now disallow goods in to or out of the country because some form or other is incorrectly filled out.

    but otherwise
travel to europe is more difficult / expensive
trade with europe is more difficult /expensive
in fact most stuff is now more expensive or not available at all
pesky immigrants coming over the channel in 3x the number
    etc etc

where's the upside to all this?

    • zilchfadein11
    • the fishing thing was always weaponised (sovereign waters etc.) but it's such a miniscule part of the puzzle lol, apart from the fishermen who voted for Brexitfadein11
    • and now regret their decision. Should've done their own research. 90% ish of our fishing is sold to EU lol, just absurd.fadein11
    • Wasn’t Brexit originally devised as sort of a political trick but then it backfired? I mean, was there ever a real expectation that it would be good?nb
    • obviously, it was mainly an attempt at appeasing a huge part of the conservative party, was never expected to backfire and it did terribly. Unfortunately wefadein11
    • had a Brexiteer in opposition at the time also.fadein11
    • i have no idea, that's why i'm asking. i see no upside at all, just worse.hans_glib
    • i'm trying to understand what sort of utopia brexiteers thought they were getting. i mean we can easily take the piss about blue passports and the glorious £hans_glib
    • but i don't believe that even the most stupid ukipper thought that was the end game. there must have been something elsehans_glib
    • relentless anti EU media and fake promises were strong, those people are dying out now, there may be hope in the future. But surely remain and reform was alwaysfadein11
    • the best option. Everyone knows the EU has problems, even the most staunch remainers.fadein11
    • The flood of turkish immigrants was a huge driver as well... utter nonsense, still makes me angry a bit lolfadein11
    • Depends how you define success. Out and free to act the cunt without the ECJ, ditching Human Rights Act, first tangible step in collapse of the EU is jackpotFax_Benson

    • A lot of people have shut up... as they have egg on face.shapesalad
    • I still find it absurd that our miniscule fishing industry is such a driver of political opinion when our main contribution to GDP is financial service andfadein11
    • money laundering.fadein11
    • and vape shops, why aren't people getting worked up over the now struggling vape shop sector. Bizarre.fadein11

'For a start, tourism will be booming'

As a result of what, exactly. Please, do explain the logic underlying that conclusion.

'France and Germany will be falling over themselves to do business because their economy relies heavily on the UK buying their stuff'

Err, no. In order of exports, the EU's largest trading partners are the United States, China and Russia.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Li…

'London is still financial capital of the world'

That would actually be New York City. Not London.

'Multi nationals will still go there as they speak english'

Not with a crippled British economy they're aren't.

'No longer get told what to do by unelected people in Brussels'

    Correction: MEPs are elected.

'Get to control who comes into the country like Australia'

You were always able to anyway. The UK was never in the Schengen zone, and even EU nationals had to present ther passports. Nothing here changes.

    • They might be falling over themselves to buy up more of our assets if the pound is 25% downRanger
