Has anyone noticed how similar the UI generated by different AI models is? They all seem to converge on a common look and feel...geometric Google fonts, gradients, giant outlined type at the bottom of the page.
I began associating this type of design with Claude, but it could be that it's just what you get by averaging the world's web design output. If that's true it's an extraordinary degree of convergence...models even favor similar words if you ask them to name something.
You have to wonder how much this is happening in other areas and is just more visible in design or writing. And if you think about it, this tendency just gets reinforced because people create content with AI, then the AI trains on the content you created with AI.

Yes.
And no, that's not the position of the Linux kernel.
I realize that some people really dislike AI, but this is an area where I'm willing to absolutely put my foot down as the top-level maintainer.
Linux is not one of those anti-AI projects, and if somebody has issues with that, they can do the open-source thing and fork it.
Or just walk away.
AI is a tool, just like other tools we use. And it's clearly a useful one.
It may not have been that "clearly" even just a year ago, but it's no longer in question today.
There are other questions around AI (like what the economy of it will actually look like in the end), but "is it useful" is no longer one of those questions. Anybody who doubts that clearly hasn't actually used it.
Yes, it can also be a somewhat painful tool, both for maintainer workloads and just from a "it keeps finding embarrassing bugs" standpoint.
But the solution is not to put your head in the sand and sing "La La La, I can't hear you" at the top of your voice like some people seem to do.
The solution is to make sure those LLM tools _help_ maintainers instead of just causing them pain. There's no question on that side.
We're not forcing anybody to use it, but I will very loudly ignore people who try to argue against other people from using it.
And no, AI isn't perfect. But Christ, anybody who points to the problems at AI had better be looking in the mirror and pointing at themselves at the same time.
Because it's not like natural intelligence is always all that great either.
The kernel project has been and will continue to be about the technology.
Sure, the social angle of working on open source is important and often a very motivating part of the project, but in the end that's a side benefit, not the _point_ of the project.
This is *NOT* some kind of "social warrior" project, never has been, and never will be.
In the kernel community we do open source because it results in better technology, not because of religious reasons.
And so we make decisions primarily based on technical merit. Not fear of new tools.

As this article talks about there are a lot of misconceptions about what open weight/open source means and it gets mapped onto the economic conflict with China. American media often frames it like China is copying the technology and giving it away for free.
But I think what it really means is that AI will become more accessible and less controlled/censored in the future. Right now it's mostly businesses and people working in AI who are using these models but as hardware improves it seems likely that more and more people will be running them locally. Imagine buying a laptop and then downloading open weight model as part of the setup process, configuring it to whatever you want and running it locally without paying a subscription.

I built an extremely robust scripting/ expressions system for After Effects via Claude. I'm amazed how cool it is.
Got clients that have regular/ weekly updates to their social media, YT and TV assets.
Now I can simply paste the client briefs with all the info into Claude to utilize the skill and then I run the script via AE and it will load all the info, images and any other parameters from an excel file and done. The text fields and other elements are instantly updated.
On top of that it will also recognize what layers need to be switched on or off depending on the info or turn them into certain colors depending on the info too.
Previously all of this stuff was really tedious to update manually on all the individual assets and now this saves so much time.
Of course this could've been done theoretically without Claude but it's not just simple expressions and the script is pretty complex too, something that exceeds my capabilities as I'm not a coder.

I was getting fed up with Anthropic but Opus 5 seems like a very good model. At the end of the day, they have the best ecosystem and user experience for developers and Opus 5 fixes the problem of Fable being so expensive/resource hungry while being about as powerful.
