Adobe Wants Photoshop to Be More Like New Acquisition Figma

Photoshop, the company’s flagship image-editing product, will add more collaboration tools, artificial intelligence features and web capability as the creative giant aims to update its software portfolio for a younger and more-casual audience. Last month, Adobe announced it would buy Figma Inc. to try to capture some of the small businesses, social media creators and nonprofessionals who have flocked to the upstart maker of web-based design tools.

The updates introduced Tuesday at Adobe’s annual product conference symbolize the company’s efforts to streamline its offerings as smaller rivals like Figma and Canva Inc. threaten the software juggernaut’s market dominance. Adobe has responded with updates to its line of desktop creative tools and the introduction of a slimmed-down online Photoshop and Adobe Express, a web-based service that looks more like Canva than other Adobe products on the desktop.

Figma’s revenue this year was $81MM.

It still has steep growth trajectory, but nothing is certain in the world.

If revenue were to stay flat, it would take about 247 years to make back this $20B.

Note: I am aware that revenue isn’t profit, I am aware that growth is likely, I am aware that part of the $20B was paid in stock, I am aware that they may be trying to cull presumed losses.

    Still, 247 years!!!

    Adobe overpaid.

    • Individually, investors are dumb. As a whole group, they generally are correct.nb

Fuggin Adobe and Pantone! Just saw a notice in InDesign pop up stating "Some Pantone colours may no longer be available due to changes in Pantone’s licensing with Adobe".

Apparently we now need to fork out an extra $60 a year (to Pantone) to fuggin access the Pantone colour library in Adobe products.

Further info says... "Pantone’s licensing with Adobe was adjusted. Due to this change, customers will need to purchase Pantone Connect licenses to access Pantone colors in Adobe Creative Cloud products."

    Wow! Fugg those khents!

    • How was that a good decision for Pantone and Adobe? Surly it was in both parties interest to come to an agreement.shapesalad
    • so if we have the Pantone swatches IRL we can't pick colors 'cuz Adobe CS doesn't have the colors anymore?!

      Unreal
      grafician
    • Wut? Just make a spot colour swatch, call it whatever it is in the book and the printer will do itsausages
    • that's a DTP hack, not a "feature" in 2022 in the main apps for fucking design

Adobe is openly adversarial to its users now!
      grafician
    • Not a hack. If you spec your Pantones from Adobe swatches on screen and not a book you're doing it wrong.sausages

After Effects - Dependencies - Collect Files
You'll get what you need, although adding in the fonts would be nice. Quark Express did it 30 years ago.

The real problem is even if you check the Selected Comps option, you know you're going to get tons of crap you never asked for.

    • I've spent so much time going through the project folders and saying saying, "No. I didn't want you.", then doing the same with the footage folder on my drive.CyBrainX
    • reduce project first. be careful to save separately to keep your original.shapesalad
    • You select the comps you want to keep - reduce project. Save As. Then do a collect files. Font Book - grab font. Send to co-worker.shapesalad
    • I think they don't bundle fonts to avoid licensing issues; The engine that deals with font DRM in ID, Acrobat, AI, etc. isn't in AE.evilpeacock
  • SimonFFM4

The whole saving process in Photoshop is so odd now:

Save, Save as, Save a copy, Quick export, Quick export as, Export for web, ...

Save as JPG is not possible anymore when there are layers (it used to ask if ok to flatten in the past).

Also I recently get a "Save to cloud" screen first, even though I just want to save locally.

    Is Adobe reading this thread?

    • affinity photo, just sayinghans_glib
    • I really miss Photoshop, if I'm honest. Affinity's useful enough, but there are so many things PS Just Does Better. That said, fuck Adobe.Nairn
    • And as Not Great as Designer is, it's utterly unusable for my work as it doesn't handle stroke thicknesses under 0.1pt or something. Useless.Nairn
    • And also asset export with its own set of separate conventions. And then legacy output modes. So weird.monospaced
    • This is a good point. They really should have one export window with tabs for GIFs, PDFs, layer comps to images, PNGs, etc. All of it.CyBrainX
    • Never save, use iPhone to photograph your artwork from the monitor, clients so far haven't noticed. Keep computer running 24/7 and all projects open.shapesalad
    • better yet just do a screen capture. Use any free software, and don’t mind how it compresses, nobody will notice.monospaced
    • this never made sense to me. I get the idea that "export" is for files other than .psd files and that's what adobe nominally considers as "saving" but that's socherub
    • some marketing douche's wet dream. nobody fucking cares adobe. just use the word "save" and drop all the dorky "export" talk.cherub
    • They need more options: 'Save export as', 'Slow save mode', 'Export and save a copy', 'Quick save as an export' 'copy as an export' 'save export and copy'shapesalad
    • even the most fanatical adobe fanboy has at least heard of non-adobe programs even if they don't use them.cherub
    • it should just be save, save as, export. all streamlined, optimised, fast, great ui.shapesalad
    • It's the result of too much legacy stacking; e.g. PS can't get rid of "Save for Web..." because it's still the only way to do some things (animated GIF).evilpeacock
    • You can change the settings back to a legacy version. That's what I did and it's all fine. But yeah, it's stupid.formed
    • I still save for web for most shit.monospaced
    • With save as and export as a 500x400px JPG resulted at 20mb. Really time some Adobe dude checks on this.SimonFFM
