    Media Encoder: Adobe's worst product.

Can I please CONSISTENTLY change output settings for multiple files at the same time?
Can you stop appending _1 in the file name to files I want to replace?
Can you take less than a half hour to open moderately complex After Effects files?

    • Each of these things happen randomly, without explanation or pattern to the fuckery.CyBrainX

So the morons at Adobe just upgraded Photoshop yesterday without fixing one of their biggest software glitches.

  • CyBrainX0

This font takes minutes to switch to the rough versions. Just as long to switch from them after giving up.

I hit "No" a bunch of times then it asked for access to specific folders (fine), and now that.

Adobe reported $4.26 billion in review last quarter.

    • glad to say none of that was taken from me.
      fucking scammers.

Today is the end of, what is for me, a very long era.

I'm nixing my CC subscription, just doing Illy, which I absolutely need, and am moving off my once-beloved Photoshop to Affinity Photo. I've been using Photoshop since version fucking 3.

But, I use Photoshop so little, and generally for really basic things I could've done with Photoshop 7(or whatever), so it's really hard to justify continue paying for. I really don't use anything else in the CC suite either.

By the way, Affinity are selling their wares at half price at the moment.

So long, and thanks for the fish.

    :(

    .

Affinity Designer's a steaming mess to my eyes though, so although I have it, I think I'll continue not using it.

    • Cue PonyBoy in 3, 2, 1...Nairn
    • I'll be saving myself £370 over the next year, and about £410 per year subsequently.Nairn
    • It's not much, monthly, but given I've been looking all my finances recently (I wonder why?), it's not an insignificant amount at the end of the year either.Nairn
    • media encoder to cut and convert mp4 to gifsted
    • I've been using the Affinity suite for a year or so. My usage is light, so it's been great. The only issue I ran into is it doesn't handle .webp files.section_014
    • Doing the same at end of year when CC sub is up. I don't need CC like I used to. Affinity fills the gap now. BTW Affinity apps 50% right now.ETM
    • I'm sure you know, but there are tons of vids on YT for all things Affinity. Good luck!stoplying
    • I still use Audition, Photoshop, Illy, Bridge...sometimes Premiere and started now with Lightroom. I know alternatives to all of them except Bridge.oey_oey
    • And I could live without Adobe for what I do but having all at once seemingly integrated and just there...I have all Affinity Apps but I couldn't make the jumpoey_oey
    • huh? hmm... had no idea I made that sort of impression on you... I have little opinion about your post btw outside I'm glad you seem content w/your choice. xoxoPonyBoy
    • I should've added a ;) or something thereNairn
    • How is Affinity Photo vs Lightroom? I've dabbled in Darktable, and I fucking hate it.garbage
    • I've been told so many times that you get used to the quirkiness of Darktable, but again: I fucking hate it.garbage
    • just pirate the Adobe stuff, it's easier than it has ever been to get them workiing - some torrents come pre-cracked.face_melter
    • Urgh.
Darktable is to Lightroom as GIMP is to Photoshop.
Fuck it up the ass. To death.

    • @face Yeah, I think the future is, as one colleague so eloquently put it when CC launched, "less than legal".garbage
    • @Cont It makes no sense. Somebody tried to give me the "Darktable is to Lightroom as Resolve is to Premiere". Demonstrably false.garbage
    • i would not disagree with your comment about aff designer. it is inferior to ai in many ways. i'm forcing myself to persevere, but have cs3 as backup.hans_glib

    • Back on topic, though ... I haven't used Designer, but I have used Publisher, and it's mostly pretty good, except for the layers palette behaviour.Continuity

    • Designer needs a lot of work in the UX/workflow area, and needs accessibility features for PDFs added.i_monk

I wish they'd put in more effort in some AI tech to generate realistic shadows.

Let's say you have a cutout of a person and place it on a background. You could define the floor and light source/ direction/ type/ strength, etc and Photoshop would generate a realistic non-linear shadow that you could further tweak.

Nothing more annoying than creating realistic shadows with good contact shadows and nice falloff.

  • CyBrainX1

Petitioning Adobe to fix Media Encoder issues that have been annoying for years.

    • Just do yourself a favour, export Pro Res and mp4 it with Handbrake.shapesalad
    • What he saidGabriel
    • But that's two steps in rendering. I can almost as easily do that with After Effects and then Media Encoder. .CyBrainX
    • Media Encoder doesn't have issues exporting to the same folder as the source, whether it's an.mov or .aep in the AME folder.CyBrainX
    • What I'm fighting for is the one-step output from AE to mp4 that Media Encoder was made for.CyBrainX

The whole saving process in Photoshop is so odd now:

Save, Save as, Save a copy, Quick export, Quick export as, Export for web, ...

Save as JPG is not possible anymore when there are layers (it used to ask if ok to flatten in the past).

Also I recently get a "Save to cloud" screen first, even though I just want to save locally.

    Is Adobe reading this thread?

    • affinity photo, just sayinghans_glib
    • I really miss Photoshop, if I'm honest. Affinity's useful enough, but there are so many things PS Just Does Better. That said, fuck Adobe.Nairn
    • And as Not Great as Designer is, it's utterly unusable for my work as it doesn't handle stroke thicknesses under 0.1pt or something. Useless.Nairn
    • And also asset export with its own set of separate conventions. And then legacy output modes. So weird.monospaced
    • This is a good point. They really should have one export window with tabs for GIFs, PDFs, layer comps to images, PNGs, etc. All of it.CyBrainX
    • Never save, use iPhone to photograph your artwork from the monitor, clients so far haven't noticed. Keep computer running 24/7 and all projects open.shapesalad
    • better yet just do a screen capture. Use any free software, and don’t mind how it compresses, nobody will notice.monospaced
    • this never made sense to me. I get the idea that "export" is for files other than .psd files and that's what adobe nominally considers as "saving" but that's socherub
    • some marketing douche's wet dream. nobody fucking cares adobe. just use the word "save" and drop all the dorky "export" talk.cherub
    • They need more options: 'Save export as', 'Slow save mode', 'Export and save a copy', 'Quick save as an export' 'copy as an export' 'save export and copy'shapesalad
    • even the most fanatical adobe fanboy has at least heard of non-adobe programs even if they don't use them.cherub
    • it should just be save, save as, export. all streamlined, optimised, fast, great ui.shapesalad
    • It's the result of too much legacy stacking; e.g. PS can't get rid of "Save for Web..." because it's still the only way to do some things (animated GIF).evilpeacock
    • You can change the settings back to a legacy version. That's what I did and it's all fine. But yeah, it's stupid.formed
    • I still save for web for most shit.monospaced
    • With save as and export as a 500x400px JPG resulted at 20mb. Really time some Adobe dude checks on this.SimonFFM

After Effects - Dependencies - Collect Files
You'll get what you need, although adding in the fonts would be nice. Quark Express did it 30 years ago.

The real problem is even if you check the Selected Comps option, you know you're going to get tons of crap you never asked for.

    • I've spent so much time going through the project folders and saying saying, "No. I didn't want you.", then doing the same with the footage folder on my drive.CyBrainX
    • reduce project first. be careful to save separately to keep your original.shapesalad
    • You select the comps you want to keep - reduce project. Save As. Then do a collect files. Font Book - grab font. Send to co-worker.shapesalad
    • I think they don't bundle fonts to avoid licensing issues; The engine that deals with font DRM in ID, Acrobat, AI, etc. isn't in AE.evilpeacock

Fuggin Adobe and Pantone! Just saw a notice in InDesign pop up stating "Some Pantone colours may no longer be available due to changes in Pantone’s licensing with Adobe".

Apparently we now need to fork out an extra $60 a year (to Pantone) to fuggin access the Pantone colour library in Adobe products.

Further info says... "Pantone’s licensing with Adobe was adjusted. Due to this change, customers will need to purchase Pantone Connect licenses to access Pantone colors in Adobe Creative Cloud products."

    Wow! Fugg those khents!

    • How was that a good decision for Pantone and Adobe? Surly it was in both parties interest to come to an agreement.shapesalad
    • so if we have the Pantone swatches IRL we can't pick colors 'cuz Adobe CS doesn't have the colors anymore?!

      Unreal
