Solid State VS Hard Disk

I'm looking for a long term storage solution and was thinking of investing in a Drobo (model 5n + 5 3tb drives = $1,165 on Amazon)... but I have a feeling that solid state drives will soon be the standard as price decreases and capacity increases.
Do you think the Drobo will become obsolete within the next 5 years?

why aren't solid state drives the standard for portables?
granted i haven't done much research, but i'm in the market for say a 2 tb portable usb. i just can't find any ss options.

SSDs aren't particularly worthwhile as 'storage' drives as such - but they very much are for boot or application drives.
Long-term stroage doesn't need to be quick, but does benefit from redundancy and over-capacity.
Hence why CERN and the like still rely upon tape for storage - it isn't the quickest or sexiest, but it's the only game in town when you need to record 6Gb data per second, for years on end...

Drobo, or Synology (which I use), won't be obsolete. I don't see why you couldn't have the same platform with ssd. Probably won't be as worried about redundancy, but it'll be a long time before I feel secure about all data on only one drive, ssd or not.
You'll fill that Drobo up in no time and retire it before 5 years anyway. Everything just keeps getting bigger.

the beauty of drobo is you can replace disks whenever and it will dynamically re-adjust. so buy the cheaper hdd now, then when ssd becomes more reasonably priced, swap them out.
like detritus said, ssd's aren't really for storage but for quick booting, but your drobo will definately benefit from faster drives. plus when you raid a few drives in any kind of nas (or usb or whatever) you'll get a faster speed than any one of the drives.

+1 for SSD boot drive. Until they get much cheaper, do you really need such quick access for your archive? I mean, stuff's in there for a reason...

Solid state all the way. Hard drives fall apart all the time.

i use one of these with some backup software. and HDDs. SSD's not worth the price as a storage medium. I use samsung 5400 2TB f4s... they were about $70 each and had a read/write of 110MB which was awesome for 5400 drive. Figure the slower the speed the better the longevity... not sure the reason for drobo cost for a single user.

If I had the money, I would totally store everything I have on SSD. It's the winner in terms of reliability and speed. But, they are over 10x as expensive as hard drives, per GB.
I think cloud is awfully expensive for most uses. (Why do you think everybody is getting into the business?) You can easily spend what an equivalent hard drive costs every month on cloud storage and access fees.
And now that you can pretty much expense whatever you spend on computers, there aren't many tax advantages to cloud.

I'm with boobs – would totally go with SSD all the way. I've had HDs die on me because of hardware issues. No moving parts is a win. I think the drobo is a bit of a scam. Just set up your own mirrored raid (buy two drives the same size and use disk utility). No need to pay $$ for an enclosure with built-in RAID.
SSDs should go down once things like TRIM are figured out and built-in to all. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TR...
